FERGUSON PREDICTS ERA OF PROSPERITY (Continued from page 1) many ways in which Col. McLaugh- lin had manifested his interest. Invitation a "Royal Command" Mr. Ferguson, before declaring the Fair formally open, expressed his pleasure at again visiting Oshawa, "Conditions under which 1 come here are particularly pleasant to me" said the High Commissioner. "For a number Of years Bill Sin- clair had the idea in his head that I had to do all that he asked and told me to do. That went oy for a long time so that whe, I got thls invitation to come and attend the Oshawa Fair I considesed it in the light of a Royal command, and was forced to accept out 'of habit, "Though I have been temporarily deported out of the gountry dur- ing the last eighteen or twenty months I am, of course, still vitally interested in the affairs of this province, and I get 3 real thrill from being back among so many friends. "No matter how advanced or thrifty any country may be there Is, after all, no country in the world gives more evidence of thrift, abili- ty, and solid progress than this Canada of ours, There is no cOun- try, except perhaps Great Britain, that has stood up so sturdily under every tribulation and trial, Entering a New Era "We are pow entering a new era" said the High Commissioner after reference to the recent negotiations at the Imperial Conference i, Otta- 2, "at last we .of the British Em- pire have got together as one fami- ly. "There are people, of course, who deplore the face that the direct re- sults of the conference mav not be so immediate and great as they had hoped, but we may congratulate ourselves that we have made a wide advance on every hand, "A government can only lay dow, principles. We have not studied that market, but with in- telligent application of the princi- ples now by upon I predict that Canada will reap a rich reward. "Great Britain is only now be- ginning to practise the organization of salesmanship; that will be of value to themselves and also to this country, "You cannot sell go0ds unless you sell of a quality and i, a con- dition that the customer requires. I bought a big basket of peaches the other day in Hamilton for thirty-five cents, it IT want to buy a peach in England T have to pay a shilling for it" said Mr. Ferguson. There must surely be some method by which we can transport this luscious fruit, I am sure that with scientific investigation and improve- ment of cold storage onboard ship we will find a ready market for our fruit and also for our dairy produce of different kinds. These are some of the problems which we will have to study intelligently" said Mr, Ferguson, "l see a tremendous future for agriculture and industry in this province, a development which will bring wealth and prosperity to the people, "Agriculture and industry must be prepared to supply the demand as high quality goods, at an honest price, as the consumer requires them, this will bring a great reward. "There are very appreciable signs of improved conditions. The people of Great Britain, slow but sound in their judgment, have faith in Cana- da, The financial structure of Can- ada is sound, and we are prepared, with every attribute we require, to take advantage of a great wave of prosperity. "I predict this prosperity will come in a very pronounced wav, all w~ need is a little common-sense and faith in our country and Cana da will" become the most important nation i, the Empire of nations" stated Mr, Ferguson, In closing his address the High Commissioner stated "I declare this Fair, which has been going on for the last five or six hours of- ficially open and give it my per- | mission to continue." Col. R, 8S. McLaughlin, speaking | "on behalf of the citizens of Osha- expressed the appreciation of "for his oul vig 'this citv to Mr. Ferguson, | kindness in coming to open | Fair." GRANDSTAND * CROWD ENJOYED ! Pei (Continued from page 1) | 'ple can be induced to forget their | cares and worries and find re. freshing pleasure in the fun and | merriment of the fair, If the | Oshawa Fair had done nothire else, It was worth while because of these two hours of chasingz away the blues enjoyed by tle thousands of people who flocked into and around the grand-st; ud last night. An Excellent Program The program presented hy Webb's Revue was an exrellent one, The artiets who took part showed considerable ability zs singers, dancers and musicians, while the rollicking comedy, of the most wholesomg kind, thoroughly enjoyed by the whole erowd, The members of this company are no strangers to Osh- awa Fair, but this year they ex- celled themselves and the crowd was not slow in recording its ap- preciation, Further merriment was provi- ded at the end of the regular per- WHE | troduced into the House or Cow EVENING SHOW formance by the appearance of "The Kansas Farmer and his Friend," an old time fiddler and a companion with a guitar with a fine repertoire of old-time songs and dance tunes, They provided an excellent fifteen minutes of additiona) entertainment for the crowd, Splendid Fireworks Then came the fireworks dis- play, the delight of the kiddies and one which provided its share of thrills even for the grown-ups. There were rockets and star shells throwing up the most bril- Hant of colored lights, interesting and beautiful set pieces, includ- ing a fine representation of "Brit- tania" and then the fina] "Good- Night" sign. Then the Deluge And just as it faded, it was "good-night," for down came the deluge of rain which sent the thousands of people scurrying for cover, for their automobiles and for home, The programme had just been completed when the storm broke, so the public were satisfied, although it was a hard blow for the midway company, which had been looking forward to big business after the grand- stand performance was over, and saw the crowd heading for homa without waiting to patronize the attractions it had to offer. It: was an unfortunate ending to what had been a glorious day at the fair, but officials were hopeful that the storm would ex pend its energy during the night and would bring forth another day of bright sunshine for the closing day of the 1932, fair. LABOR APPROVES PUBLIC CONTROL | OF BROADCASTING Resolution of Congress Fa- vors Plan Adopted by Parliament Hamilton, Sept, "in extending the public ownership to broadcasting field," ed in the annual Trades and Labor Congress exec- cutive at the 48th annual con- ference here, The report recalls with gratification that 'legisla- tion has now been enacted prc- viding for the establishment of a commission with the necessary powers to carry on the busines of broadcasting in Canada ard also for the purpose of regulatng and controlling broadcasting by other agencies." The speech of the prime mini- ter when the radio bil} was ir-; 13.-----Success principle of the radio was approv- report of the 24 last {8 quol@d Mr. Bennett principle that mons on May the executive, then vojced the since 'broadcasting is a science that is only yet in its infancy and about which we know little vet, I cannot think that any gov- ernment - would be warranted leaving the air to private.exploit- ation and not reserving it for development for the use of the people." The report continues:- "Up to the time of writing.. no action has been taken by tue government to give effect to Yee provisions of the new act or 19 appoint a commission authorized therein." Continued membership in acd support of the Canadian Radice League is urged, this body, ac- cording to the report, "being tie best. medium to protect the pup- lic interests in respect both to the creation of the necessary ad- ministrative machinery and th subsequent safe-guarding of pub lic rights in broadcasting inat- ters." by A gallon of gasoline, properly 3 An inventor in row York City has designed a model of a 250 passenger life boat, that by auto- matic devices, can he lowered m- to the water in 20 seconds, re- gardless of position.
