HELD BANQUET Prizes Presented at Pleas- ant Culmination of 1931 Season ---------- . (Cora Butler, Correspondent) . Newcastle, 16--As a pleasant culmination of a season's enjoyment the Men's and Ladies' Bowling Clubs united to hold a banquet and presentation of Prizes won during the summer tournaments. The event took place at Elmhurst Inn on Friday last and over fifty sat down in the attractive dining rooms at small tables decorated with vel- low chrysanthemums, The newly elected President, Mr, George Jam~ ieson, was chairman and Toast Master for the occasion. After the usual toasts, Mr. Henry Ragen, of Toront., who with Mrs, Ragen was an honored guest, presented the John Douglas Trophy to the win- ning team. Mr. Ragen has alwavs acted as the Fairv Godfather to the clubs, and as such gave the John Douglas Trophy in memory of his Father-in-law and also four small replicas of the cup. The winning team were Messrs. Bert Brereton, skip, W. P. Rogers, W. Crowthers and J. Philp. The scotch doubles were 'won by Messrs. Crowthers and Moffat and consisted of travs made by the J. Anderson Smith Mr. Ragen then presented a bou- quet of mums to the president of e Ladies' Club, Mrs. J. A. Butler pi th~ Ladies' prizes were ores sented. To the winning team, Mr Ragen gave small silver cups suit- ably engraved. These were won bv esdames Britton, skip; P. Hare. P. Rogers and H. Bonathan. The ranners-up, Mesdames, J. R. Fisher, E. C. Fisher, C, Carveth, and . Law, received glass comports, given by Mrs. J. A. Butler. For most points in the singles, Mrs. Batty gave Mrs, E. C. Fisher a sil- ver cake plate and for most games in the singles, Mrs. Law won a luncheon cloth given by Mrs, W, P. Rogers. A covered baking dish was given by Mrs. Bonathon for a cone soltion prize and won by Mrs, Percy Brown. The doubles prize, green. salad sets, were given bv Mrs. Britton and won by Mrs. J. R. and Mrs. E. C, Fisher. Mrs, Philp gave the oF prizes, bon hon dishes and Mrs. Hancock and Mrs Cowan won them. The last evens ir~'s play of the season consisted of a jitney of 12 men against 12 women and the men won. The Women's Association met for their monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Orval Stone on as | Thursday afternoon, Dec, 10th, with a splendid attendance, The president, Mrs, Jas. Shunk, pre- siding. Meeting opened with the singing of hymn "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", in memory of the late Mrs, W. Gibson, a val- ued member of the soclety some few years ago, followed by pray- er by Mrs. Green and the "Lord's Prayer" in unison, Mrs. T. Couch read the scripture lesson. 'Roll call and minutes of last meeting read and adopted. Several items of business were discussed and transacted, after which readings were given by Mrs, A, Bruce and Mrs. A, IL. Orchard, Meeting closed with a Christmas hymn and benediction. Lunch served apd social time spent. Quite at number attended the funeral service at Salem United Church on Wednesday on arrival of motors from Toronto of the late Mrs, Wesley Gibson, form- erly of Seagrave. Rev.
