"Well, what about it?' she ask- ed, puzzled. "Well, I just want to warn you not to give my suit away while I'm out of it. It happens to be the only one I have left." The doctor arrived to find the Scotsman in tears. "Don't worry," he soothed, "you'll soon be bet- ter." TINE STORIE WS i Someliovw 'tis always in the night That we. most subject are to fright. ~--Farmer Brown's Boy. That is because the unseen creates fear when that which could be seen might not. Imagin- ation always works at such a time. There is mystery about the unseen whereas in daylight there is none. So it was that often in the night before he had fallen asleep in the cld cabin, where he was camping with Stumpy, the dd prospector, Farmer Brown's Boy heard noises outside that sometimes cause a creepy feeling. In the morning they would be forgotten. But 'one night toward morning he was awakened by a new sound and found Stumpy also awake and lis- tening. "It is the horses," said Stum- py, getting up and striking a light and then slipping his boots on. "They have pulled their pickets and come up near the cabin, Some- thin' has frightened them, Must be a varmint of some kind around." Farmer Brown's Boy could hear the horses stamping close to cabin, 'and. when Stumpy opened the door they crowded close. Both were trembling and there was a look ef fright in their widely open eyes. "Yes, sir," said Stumpy, "them horses is plumb scared and noth- in' but a varmint would have made them act this way." He stepped out and began to talk, soothingly to the horses, which crowded close to him and stood shaking with fear as they gazed off into the blackness of the night, "Reckin I'll git up the rest of the night." said Stumpy. "It will be daylight afore 1 , Anyway Then we'll find o frightening these poor brutes so You go back to sleep." : But Farmer Brown's Doy wa: too excited to sleep. He lay in his bunk, wide awake and listened to Stumpy picketing the horses close to the cabin and talking soothingly all the while. be no more trouble tonight," said he. "No varmint is going to come prospectin' go close to this cabin movin' light." "What kind of a you think it ' was?" Farmer Brown's Doy. "Ain't no way of daylight," replied "Might have been a Bear might have been a Cat." "Do you mean Mountain Lion?" asked Farmer Brown's Boy. "Some folks call it that, just call it Cat. There's others call it Painter and Cougar. Yon can take your choice," replied Stumpy." "If that is what it is he won't bother none no more to- night, He does like horse flesh but he is plumb sceery of man. I've fastened those horses so they won't break loose again. Now, i You go to sleep like I sald." But Farmer Brown's Boy could- n't and didn't go to sleep, and as soon ag it was daylight he was up and dressed. "When do we go look to find out what that var- mint was?" he demanded. Stumpy grinred. "When we have had breakfast and there is light enough to see something," he replied. "Do you think we will gee the about and eeein' this varmint do tellin® 'till Stumpy and Me, 1 = RT s 4 . » t what has heen | "Won't | ventured | By Thornton W. But we'll find out what it was give them horses the jimjams." So after breakfast they led the horses back to where they had been picketed the evening before. The latter snorted and hung back, but Stumpy soothed them and once more staked them out. Then he began to look about. Present- ly he called Farmer Brown's Boy over to a little sapdy soot, and pointed to two big, round {foot- prints' "Just as I thought," said he. "It was a Cat, and a big one, The horses smelled him and broke away befort he could jump them. Wish we had some dogs along." As if in answer to that wish who should come riding up to the cabin along about noon but Cou- sin Tom, and with him were two of the dogs from the ranch. (Copyright, 1931, by T. W.
