(37, 41, 43) TOURIST TRADE IS FALLING OFF Year's Benefit To Canada Less Than 1930 and This Ottawa. --Canada had a credit bal- ance of 166 millions from the tour- ist industry in 1930. That figure re- presented the difference en the money spent abroad by travel- ling Canadians and what was distri- buted in this country by residents of United States, Great Britain and the other nations of the world who toured Canada. In the previous vear, Canada had a credit balance from this industry of approximately $18,000,000. A report issued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, says in part: "Comparison of data for 1929 and 1930, item by item, throws a clear light on the great changes wrought in Canada's international transac- tions in goods and services by the world depression which began at the end of 1929, and by the difficul- ties involved in the marketing of wheat. "Merchandise exports fell from $1,200 million in 1929 to $905 million in 1930. Though the wheat situation partly explains this drop it is also largely accounted for by lower gen- eral price levels in 1930 as compared with 1929. In fact if price fluctua- tions are eliminated by revaluing quantities exported in the fiscal year ending March, 1931, at the export prices prevailing in the previous fis- cal year, it appears that domestic exports show a decline of only 13.3 per cent as compared with a de- crease based on declared values of 98.6 per cent." : The small boy entered the chem- ist's shop and asked for twopence worth of ipecacuanha. "And please," he added, "mummy says you've to charge it to her account." "Very well, little man," answered the kindly chemist, "and what is your name?" "Higglespeake." The day was sultry. "Here you are," said the chemist. "Tell your mother she can have it for nothing. I'm not going to write ipecacuanha and Higglespeake on a day like this for the sake of twopence."
