THE OVER-ARM SThOKE Without practice in the various elements of strokes and without exercises undertaken to bring up muscular strength and wind power, it is virtually impossible to make progress towards our proper swimming strokes. printed lessons, without the aid of a first-class instructor, This is especially true of attempts to learn swimming from Therefore lest the beginner begin to get restive under the number of exercises I Prescribe. I am maki, the point at this stage that each one of the exercises which I have described in past articles leads either directly to the goal of correct strokes, or aids in accustoming the beginner to the water. Many of the exercises are in effect elements in one or more of the strokes, so that when the stroke itself is described at least parts of the method will already be familiar. Don't hurry! Don't be discouraged! The exercises are fun in them- selves, and half the battle is won when confidence in yourself has been gained. The ovcr-arm stroke is an adaptation of the side stroke as described in lessons five and six in this series, and should not be attempted before this stroke has been mastered. In this stroke the upper arm, right or left, according to whether the deft or right side is used, makes a com- plete circle. The over-arm is faster than the side stroke, since the arm is brought above the surface of the water, decreasing the amount of re- sistance encountered when bringing the arm forward through the water as in the side stroke. the palm turned outward, When bringing the arm forward be sure to have The palm is held sideways when entering the water, turning flat when the undersweep is made.
