For the last 12 months the eom- mittee has been enquiring 4ato the operations of the Rent Acts, and it has now decided to recom- mend to the Minister that: -- The control of working-clags houses and rents must be renew- There must be no furter tn- creases in the permissible scale of rents; The scandal of profiteering in the sub-letting of rooms must be ended. Some of the members of the committee are trying to their colleagues to incorporate in the report a clause recommending that the present scale of rents-- 40 per cent, above pre-war-- should be reduced to 30 per cent. On the other hand, urgent rep- resentations were made to the committee by property owners' organizations urging that the control of house property should now be abolished and that land- lords should be left free to tviet tenants as they choose, ani to increase rents to any figure which seem to them proper. A convincing case was put be- fore the committee by the vie- tims of landiadies who profiteer by sub-letting rooms. Examples were cited to show that houses are divided up and let off in such a way that the tenant is receiving from sub-ten- ants three and four times as much as he is paying to the Jand- lord. The Cabinet intend to consider the report before Parliament ad. journs for the autumn, and in-|' troduce a bill to give effect to the recommendations. A keen struggle is extremely likely when the proposals are put before the House. Otherwise the Rents Act would expire on Christmas Day so far as England and Wales are con- cerned, and in May next in Seo:- lund. LJ LITTLE MAID In April when the sunshine came ny chestnut-altar was aflame ith ig tapers. Ever higher They stretched to catch the heav- enly fire, A blackbird flew there with his wife And sang the glorious hymn of lite. The candles now afe burning dim And sllent is that joyful hymn. The chestnut spreads each leafy palm To keep her altar cool and ealm. And in her quietness and shade Lies sleeping Joy, my little maid. --Estelle Boughton, in the Chil- dren's Newspaper, Notice To Creditors R.S.0. 1927 -- Chap. 150 -- Sec. § ESTATE OF CASSIUS SEE STONE, Gentleman, Deceased.
