She wants to write more poétry and perhaps compose music but she wants 10 do it in Spain, Accordingly, she plans to attend Barnard in the fall to study Spanish. "She's erayz about Spain," said her mother, "We are of Spanish ancestry and she wants to go there. 8he was all unset over the Spanish revolution but she didn't get much sympathy around here." Nathalia has written five books of poems, two novels and a song. She wrote the graduating class poem. + LABELLING THE BABY SCIENGE IN ONTARIO Toronto General Hospital System Commended by Eminent British Med- ical Men London, June 19.--YLabelling the Baby, Solomon's Dilemma Avoided" is the heading of an article in The Manchester Guard- fan's London edition which refers method of a hospital in London, Ont., of tak- ing the mother's fingerprint and the new baby's footprint, and cites eminent British medical men in praise of the system of the Toronto General Hospital in pre- venting mix-ups of new-born bab- ies by each baby being given a necklace of beads clasped by a perforated slot fastener which be meddled with, The Guardian says: "One of the responsibilities of those in charge of maternity hos- pitals is to see that the right babies are attributed to the right mothers. Babies, it cannot be denied, are very much alike at birth, and nurses in most London hospitals take the pre- caution of tying labels on the infants' wrists, with all the necessary details clearly inscribed thereon. Mothers have been heard to murmur against this particu- lar application of business meth- od. Why, they ask, should their baby--s0 obviously the finest and most beautiful baby in the world --be labelled as if he were a museum exhibit or an entrant in a dog show? "But if the mothers. of Lon- don (England) are annoyed by such precautions they would be deeply shocked it they had to submit to what 18, after all, quite a popular practice in London (Ontario). For. there, in one hospital, on the same card every mother's fingerprint and every baby's footprint are unequivoe- ally impressed, so that the rela- tion of parent to child is as scien- titically .dockéted as that of a criminal to his crime. This is, indeed, the but one fears that its Scotland Yard associations admit of its adoption here, "The province of Ontario, however, can claim the inven- tion of yet another system which English mothers hail as ideal. At the Toronto General Hospital each baby is presented with a necklace of beads clasped by a perforated slot fastener, which, like the seal on mailbags can- not be tampered with, Blue beads are on each end of the string and white beads in the middle. But the white beads are not just ordinary beads. They are each inscribed with a letter and together these letters spell the baby's name. "Lord Dawson, of Penn, the King's physician, Sir George Badgerow, and Sir John Bland- Sutton, ex-president of the Royal College of Surgeons, who re- cently visited the hospital, were full of praise for this system. And indeed, could there be a more appropriate way of preserve ing the identity of a child? In- stead of foot and finger-prints, unavoidably associated with crime, instead of 'tie-on' labels more proper to inanimate ob- jects like cabin trunks--a simple string of beads, at once and the oldest and the most universal of human oraaments."
