News in Lupe Velez, in 'Resurrection' -- Pictures rection" r The industry itself has advanced so rapidly that every phase of it must maintain the same pace. ' "In the old serial days, the picture hinged on thrilling, daring action with little chance to develop the plot by conversation. It is now possible to retain all of the action and build a finer, more impelling plot by the addition of dialogue. The modern chapter play calls for a higher type of performance on the part of the cast members. With sound being used, it is necessary that each actor must have added versatility--and in addition to acting ability and person- ality, a fine recording voice, The talkie serial players are put to a gruelling tests, "Resurrection" Starting its engagement at the New Martin theatre Tuesday, "Re- surrection" is drawing capacity audi- ences daily. Miss Hollister, who is young, slight and blonde, modestly assured her au- dience, however, that the dangers of the jungle are mostly a matter of the imagination. Wild animals don't attack you unless you inter- fere with them or corner them, she explained and the long rope- like things that twine about and hang from the 260 foot trees on- ly look like snakes. Actually they are just vines. Despite Miss Hollister's state- ment that most of the danger of the jungle came from an over-aec- tive imagination, it could not but be felt that the jungle preseated plenty of stimulus, Among tbe everyday incidents she related en passant were the facts that ove morning she wondered what her hammock was bumping into to dis- cover that an alligator had chosen its shadow to sleep in; that tar- antula spiders and scorpions had bunked in her "sneakers" and shared her pillow and that her limbs had Teen exposed to the vampire bat--just to see If he really would fan them numb with his wings and then Lite into them with 'his long teeth! uf In order to entertain her Indian hosts, she had performed a.rtunt of balancing a glass of water on her forehead, while lying down and getting up. 'Lhe | story is that of Elso, daughter of a | cobbler to royalty, whose selfish am- bitions for her, changes the course of her whole life. He insists on her marriage to Franz, a wealthy and dashing young officer, while her heart goes out to Otto, a poor musician, Otto comes to America after Elso's marriage, and many years pass be- fore they mect in New York, when he is playing second fiddle in an or- chestra. ' 'I'he old love reblossoms and they plan to go away together, but Elso renounces this hope, when she finds that he has a young son, who 'needs his care. She goes back to Vienna and they never meet again But the strange and unexpected denouement comes when the sym- phony inspired by Elsa so long be- fore, is completed as if by miracle. No more need be told except that the music of "Viennese Nights" is without doubt the most beautiful, of the man who has given the world "Maytime," "Blossom Time," "The Magic Melody," "Rosalie," "I'he New Moon," "Nina Rosa" and so many more. Oscar Hammerstein II, whose fine lyrics and books are evidenced by "Rose Marie," "Show Boat," "The New Moon," "Sweet Adeline," and others=>did the story and the songs for "Viennese Nights." Three of the captivating songs are "I Bring a Love Song," "You Will Remember Vienna," and "Here We are." The cast is headed by those Broad- wav favorites, Walter Pidgeon, Vivi- enne Segal and Alexander Gray. Jean Hersholt ives one of his great- est portrayals as the proud but mis- taken father. Louise Fazenda and Bert Roach are among the comedy hichlights. Sa Alan Crosland, responsible for the direction of "The Jazz Singer" and many Warner Bors, successes, direc ted "Viennese Nights." "PASSION FLOWER" Sex, handled in an intelligent and convincing manner, pervades "Pas- sion Flower," Metro-Goldwyn-May- er's yadaptation of Kathleen Norris' widely read novel, which opens a two day engagement at "~» Regent on Monday. This story of the frustra- tion 'of an unhapeily married woman in her attempt to win the love of her cousin's husband rises heads above the usual screen domestic triangle by way of its brilliant portravals and its atmospheric backgrounds conceived in unusually good taste. tricks were now exhausted. FOLLOW HER FASCINATING HEART STORY _. . KATHLEEN NORRIS' VASHON Wows With--KAY FRANCIS KAY JOHNSTON -- ZASU PITTS Briefly the plot concerns Cassy, who gives up wealth and social posi~ tion in order to marry the man she loves, Dan, her father's chauffeur, They are married in the home of Cassy's cousin, Dulce, the discontent ed young and beautiful wife of An- tonio Morado, an old and invalid millionaire, For five years Dan and Cassy live irom hand to mouth in a simple walk-up flat. They have two child- ren and scorn Dulce's reneated invi- tation to accept as a gift a small farm near the Morado country estate. It is only when Dan is thrown out of work that they finally accept the of- fer and move to the country, Here Dan is constantly thrown into intimate contact with the infatu- ated Dulce and the worst fears of the neglected Cassy come true, Dan leaves her for Dulce. The two go to Paris where Dan has about concluded to divorce Cassy when he receives a letter from his wife entreating him to come home. Unable to tell wheth- er his interest in Dulce is real love or merely temporary infatuation, Dan returns to see his children. In a stirring scene in Cassy's home, Dan is forced to make up his mind as to which of the two women he loves, The climax comes as a huge surprise. So exotic a story could easil have been bungled by exaggerated and tactless handling. Director Willi..n de Mille and thé scenarist, Martin Flavin, carefullv avoided these pit- fals and put the various episodes to- gether in a praiseworthy manner, It is the acting, however, that particular ly stands out. Kay Johnson as Cas- sy, Charles Bickford as Dan, Kay Francis as Dulce and Lewis Stone as Morado, all giving flawless per- formances. Good work is also done its supporting roles by Zasu Pitts as an amusingly pessimistic housekeep- er, Winter Hall as Cassy"s father, and little Dickie Moore as the son. Every detail of "Passion Flower" shows extraordinary attention and forethought. The scenes shift from America to France, and include beautifully decorated apartments and attractive land and sea vistas, Miss Francis has the honors as to gowns, wearing a bewildering series of them, All told, "Passion Flower" is one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's best.
