Erected 60 years ago this great build- ing on Muswell Hill, one of the nor- thern heights of London, has endur- ed many vicissitudes. Like its half- sister the Crystal Palace, it strug- gled hard for years to secure public favor by offering a judiicous blend of amusement with instruction. The London Public,' however, were even more neglectful of the fare provided at the Alexandra Palace than thev were of the attractions of the Crystal Palace, and for many years the Pal- ace itseli was closed. During the Great War the Palace had patrons in abundance from two kinds of en- torced holiday makers. Firstly it was used for the accommodation of Bel- gian refugees, and after wards it was turned into an internment camp for enemy aliens. When the air-raids hecame particularly virulent it was frequently suggested that the Pal- ace--crowded as it was with our en- emies' nationals--should be brilliant- ly lighted and thus make a fine mark for enemy aircraft. The organ ia the great hall was re- cently restored, btu it cannot be used to its full power for fear that the roof may fall upon it. The Government is willing to con- tribute a substantial sum towards the wages bill of a general renovation scheme which, it is estimated, would employ 600 men for six months. Thirty-five years ago Mr. Martin worked for the firm as an errand boy, but only serv- ed them, in those days during the sea son of the sale. At last he was taken in permanently as a clerk and devot- ed himself to the valuation of pic- tures. "I remember the time when Land- seer pictures and Meissomer prints fetched tremendous prices, said Mr. Martin, "Now, nobody wants them.
