Shamas Mtg. Company, New Toroute,, on one FIND POTENTIAL NEW HARBOUR ON NORTH B.C. COAST Recession of Glacier May Make Room for Townsite Victoria, B.C., Feb. 7. -- How Canada has been given =n potential new harbor on the coast of Northern British Columbia, as a result of the retro- gression of the Grand Pacific gla- cler at Glacier Bay, near Skagway, Alaska, was explained by J. Forde, Federal Government engin. eer, who has made a study of the glacier's movements. "In the days of Captain Vancou- ver in the 1790's the ice came down to the mouth of the inlet," said Mr. Forde. 'The ice has steadily re- ceded since then until the face of the principal glacler is now 8,900 feet beyond the international boun- ts dary, giving sufficient land at foot for a townsite. "The growth of this area sep- arated from ice has its commercial value to Canada, for it will now be. possible for Canadian steamship lines to establish a port of call at the foot of the glacier and thus enter the Alaskan trade, because coasting laws make it illegal for Canadian vessels to make stops consecutively at two or more Unit. ed States ports. "A few years ago the ice in Gla- cler Bay had a frontage on open water, but since then it has rotreat- od until all but one and a quarter miles is fronted by land. The re- trogression will be much slower from now on. "This strip of new territory will be of no use as a means of access to Northern British Columbia or the Yukon from the coast because the hinterland is barried by numerous -- living glaciers; but there is a pos- sibility that the place may be of some value as a whaling station. "The size of the glaciers is al- most beyond description. I have photographs of the ice bodies more than 400 feet thick, and recently a monument erected fifty feet above high water mark and several hun- dred feet inland was wrecked by the wash created when an enormous ice broke oft. " WAS FAMOUS OLD TIME COMEDIAN Harry Randall Regales Pub- lic With His Remin- iscences London.~-One of the most fam- ous of the old-time music-hall com- edians is Harry Randall. There are some greyheads, doubtless, who wii remember that it was Harry Ran- dall who used to regale them with the "Ghost" of John James Chris- topher Benjamin Binns. Harry, who for some years has been living in comfortable retirement from the hoards, has now made another suc- cess in regaling the public with his reminiscences in book form. When he played in pantomine for the first time, at Birmingham in 1886, Vesta Tilley, then a slim girl of 18, who has for many years now been known privately as Lady de Frece, played with him, A year or two later London was horrified by a series of *'Jack the Ripper" murders. Sir Charles War- ren was then Commissioner of Po- lice. Warren, who died only a few years ago rightly or wrongly was not a popular police chief. When his retirement was announced Har- ry Randall came forward with a parody of that famous classic "Cock Robin," the chorus of which ran: All the loafers in the Square fell a-sighing and a-sobbing When they heard of the death of poor Cocky Warren, A woman went into a shop and wanted to buy some goods on credit, Li Felt Bros.
