Lilian Murray, NEWCASTLE SCHOOL HOLDS ITS ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT Evelyn Allin Wins Oratory Contest--Prizes Presented to Pupils Newcastle, Nov. 29.--On Friday Eve. Nov, 28th Newcastle Commun- ity Hall was filled to the doors when the Public School held their Annual Commencement. With a few words of welcome from chairman Major H. Dudley the program was opened by the Intermediate and Senior rooms with their opening exercises which are used in the school room every morning. The pupils recited the 23rd psalm followed by singing "O Can- ada" and their pledge as follows--I ledge allegiance to Our Flag, to our ing and to our Empire, one Empire indivisible with Liberty, Equality and Justice for all, one Ged, one King, one flag, one Piedge for all, one Destiny for all, concluding with sing- ing God Save the King. Prayers were then delivered by Rev. F. H, Mason, M.A, and the .concert commenced with a splendid number "Health Ex- ercises" given by the Primary Room under the direction of iss Orchard. Two songs entitled "Lovely May" and " Rockabye Lullaby" by a two part picked chorus (of girls) unac- companied under the direction of Miss Mason. a i~ | music being composed by Jean Rick- eard. | gers. A Junior chorus by the Primary Room, a song of the wheat entitled "Golden Wheat" fifteen children taking part each one having a loar of bread ated by Mr. H. Britton, A fifteen piece rythm band by Juh- ior pupils played "La Czarine" ac- companied on the piano by Miss Mason. The instruments the children used were, drum, triangle three string bells, rythm sticks, wood block xylo- phone, three tambourines, jingle stick, sand blocks and two lots of symbols. A Russian ballet by Junior pupils in costume, directed by Miss Mason, A boys' chorus by Intermediate and Senior pupils and a girls' chorus entitled "An Original Melody" the ard for 'which she received a prize. Prizes were given as follows: First- class Proficiency prize donated by O. A. Parker, won by Ray Wright; First class Writing prize donated by Miss M. A. Purday won by Jimmie Love- kin; Second Class Proficiency prize donated by F. W. Rickard, won by Patricia Pearce, presented by Rev. W. P. Rogers, B. A.; Junior Third Proficiency prize the S. Jose Memor- ial prize donated and presented by H. Jose, won by Reta Powell; Senior Third Proficiency prize donated by T. A. E. E. Snider, Inspector of Public Schools for Durham County explain the rule governing the new revised system of schools receiving the government and county grants. Under the new system Newcastle and Orono will receive a dollar for each upil. The larger schools will be enefited and the smaller schools will receive a very small amount of money. Eddy. | The Women's Auxiliary of S: George's Anglican church, Newcast! held a_most imtegesting entertainment in thé Parish H\I on Nov, 27th. It was entitled an "Evening in Japan", Lantern slides on Japan were shown and a lecture on that country given by Rev. F. H. Mason, B.A, After the slides the curtains before the stage were opened disclosing a picturesque Japanese room in which were twn tables of Japanese curies about each one of which Mrs. Lindsay in Japan- ese dress gave an entertaining talk. Following the exhibition of curios was given a Japanese play, The char- acters were ably taken by Mrs. Win Anderson, (Rev.) Mrs. F. H. Mason, Mrs. LeGresley, Mrs. Robt. EDWARDS Margaret Jane Madill, beloved wife of the late John Edwards, and mother of Mr. Alonzo Edwards, of Whitby, passed away at her home in Pickering Township on Monday, after having been in failing health in' Pickering Township and ha ed at lot 2, con. 4, for the p years. She was a member of 4 well known family, and had a large/ num- ber of friends, She was a of the United Church. Deceased is survived by two sons, Alonzo, of Whitby, Harvey on tho homestead, and two daughtere, Mrs, Ed, Pardon, of Oshawa, and Mrs. Wilson, of Pickering. The funeral takes place Thurs- day afternoon from her late resi- dence, to Salem cemetery.
