New York and Chicago "TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 1930 A NEW HIGHWAY It Is announced that the provincial de- t of highways is planning a new hway between Toronto and Hamilton, There are already two highways connecting these two cities, but on account of the den- sity of traffic a third highway is felt to be necessary, ns out of Toomer the department of bia : ou 'oronto, the t of high» ways might well give some thought hg need of a new highway from Toronto to Oshawa, the 'congestion in the summer months Is _ quite as great as it is on either of the two he Cae highways to Hamilton, for No, 2 is the only main road running east from Toronto to this city, There would be ample traffic for two highways through this section of One tario, and both of them would have to bear heavy loads of traffic, . This, of course, is not a new proposal, but Sppasently the department of highways has taken it seriously, A There may, it is true, be some engineering difficulties in the way, on account of the contours of the land, but greater difficulties have been overcome in' highways elsewhere, so that these should not block the way. At present, there is a movement on foot to urge the government to give serious con- sideration to the construction of a 'second highway from Toronto to Oshawa. This movement should be pressed vigorously in the that the minister of highways might see the need of the situation, and take 'to provide relief for the conged- tion on No. 2 highway. ' E oF On the present highway No. '2,: published ovary | is » 'member of the | | means of beautification of the Ontario land. or S tions are to be held only _ PRESERVING WILD FLOWERS * Hyiey pei an, sppobl goon OL. fo the : ans : people of Ontario to do thelr part in the preservation of the wild flowers of tho pro- vince, The appeal is needed, for arable now bard spring ils of th er wie irihy ur and be lost plesk on AE The wild flowers consfitute one of the scape, and those who, ignorance indifference, help to deplete the wild flower resources, are gullty of a grave wrong, No one would object to the wild flower en- thusiast who digs' up, very: ully, a small wild flowers to be trans- ] and cared for here, That kind of on Is already con- vinced of the necessity of great care in pre- serving the wild flowers. The 'person to whom warning is directed is' the man who 'goes out and tears up great patches of wild flowers, indiscriminately destroying, not only the flowers of the present season, but the future possibilities that lie stored up in the roots which they thoughtlessly tear from the ground and throw away to wither and'dle, These are the people who need the warning that wild flowers should be left to flourish and multiply In thelr native ele- ment, rafher than being out to be de- stroyed simply to'satisfy a whim for which there can be no reasonable excuse, GRUBBING IN THE DIRT These are the days when the gardening enthusiasts are casting longing eyes on thelr ard plots, and wondering how long it will be before they can begin to apply the spade, hoe and rake to their soil, Oshawa i# fortunate that its homes are not so crowded as to deprive many of the pleasures of gardening, for the man who goes grub- bing in the dirt as soon as "spring comes around finds a joy and a satisfaction in life that cannot be secured by any other means, Apart altogether from the fascination of garden, the pleasure at planting the seeds and seeing the plants grow and develop to maturity, there is an added advantage which the man who is a gardener enjoys. That is the advantage of added good health which comes from the exercise which gar- through the hours spent outdoors in. the garden during the months of the year when this is possible, ' Most people nowadays have the oppor tunity for gardening, It should not be re jected, What does it matter if the weeds sometimes choke ou the flowers? What does it matter if carrots grow where beans were expected? These little surprises are part of the pleasuré of the game, The important thing is to get out and grub in the dirt, to get close to mother nature, and to feel the glow of satisfaction that comes when *the first head of lettuce or basket of beans can be: harvested. THE DICTATOR DIES The fate of Primo de Rivera might well be a lesson to others who have assumed the position of dictator, A few months ago, he was supreme in Spain, holding the reins of power with the king relegated to a second ary position. Since then, he has been de- posed from office, has had to flee into vol. untary exile, and there he has died, For. saken by all save his own immediate fam. ily, his was a lonely death, a sad ending to a career during which he ruled his country with an iron hand. Exile must have been bitter to him, Per haps its bitterness had much to do with his sudden death. And it all makes one wonder if he got enough out of his dictatorship to make it worth while. It may have been wonderful while it lasted, but the lonely | death in voluntary exile must be a warning to other dictators of the kind of fate that awaits them when the whims of the people have turned against them and forced their retirement, ' HE ---------------------- -~ EDITORIAL NOTES Many Ontarlo cities are now receiving nice gheques as rebates on power charges bf last year, Oshawa will soon be this as a result of the purchase the electric light system.
