THE OSHAWA: DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1930 OSHAWA JUNIORS ELIMINATE OAKVILLE LIONS IN FAST GAME Local "Kids" Finish Strong To Win Round 8-2 and arn | 2 Right to Meet West Toronto Game Starts Poorly But De- velops Into Fast, Thrilling Tussle -- Oshawa Scores ~--Three in Last Period -- Visitors Tire on Large Ice Surface Farewell Oakville Lions West Toronto Juniors Next In what was undoubtedly the fast: est Junior game to be seen at the local Arena, so fars this year, the Oshawa Kids defeated the Oakviile Lions by four to nothing to win the round by eight to two goals. The game besides being fast, produced everything that makes Junior hoc- key so attractive and the fans went home well pleased. The Oshawa Juniors, by virtue of their victory earned the right to meet West Toronto in tlie next round of the Ontario playoffs. The first game will be played in Toronto, at the Arena Gardens, tomorrow night with the return game at the local Arena on Monday night, First Period Uneventful The game started out poorly and for the first twenty minutes it look- ed as if it was going to be just an ordinary game, The locals took things easy and their play. at times was ragged and loose. Burr was an offender in this respect, but like the rest' of the team he snapped out of it and played smart hockey during the last two periods. The Lions took the aggressive but they were con- tent to confine their scoring threats to long range shooting which was in- effective. Vic. gave the Oshawa fans a scare when he handled several of these long shots with a little too much confidence. Neither team scor- ed during the first period and the fans were given little chance to ex- ercise their lungs, With the start of the second per- iod, the game speeded up consider-, able and play become more open. Both goalies were given plenty of work to do and they did it well. Au- thors scored Oshawa's first goal of the game on a lovely lone effort. "Jeff" took the puck from goal to goal, all alone and his perfect shot culminated a fine effort. Oakville tried hard to cut down Oshawa's lead but they lacked finish around thc nets, Final Period Fast The final period produced the fast- est hockey of the night and had the fans in a frenzy for practically all of the twenty minutes. Thirty scc- onds after the period opened, Lortie scored a nice goal when he took his own rebound off the boards and beat Adamson with a hard shot. About three minutes alter Lortie scored an- other goal, with a hard shot. Oak- ville almost scored on a nice play when Davies drew the Oshawa de- fence men together and passed out to Ronald. Ronald went in and drew Burr out of the net, but his backhand shot missed the net by about an inch. He deserved a goal. Oshawa got their fourth tally of the game on a clever combination play. Lortie broke away with Drinkle and only one de- fence man to beat. Lortic gave. Ed- AY MC Sth Annual Minstrel Show Hundreds Turned Away Last Year Get Your Tickets Now at T. B. Adamson didn't have a chance, Soon after this Lortie, while making a speedy attack, was tripped and he slid into the goalpost. He received a cut on the upper lip and was out for the remainder of the went back on him and he had to go off. Oakville spoiled a good chance here, when they weakened their own team by drawing two penalties, and the game ended with the score still 4 to Ronald, Young and Davidson were the pick of the visitors. Adamson in the nets, also turned in a fine per- formance and made a, dozen smart saves, All of the goals scored were earned counters, . He has the mak- ings of a smart goaltender. Every member of the Oshawa team turned in a good game. Burr played his usual good game. The defence worked better than ever before. Thomson run the attackers into the corner and he used his weight cf- fectively, Lortie's rushes were al- ways dangerous and his two goals came as the result of pretty efforts. The forward lines, the Alternate line especially, turned in a good game I'hey backchecked well, and practi- cally- all the time. Morison, on skates for the first time in a month, found a little difficulty in keeping his feet underneath but he was very useful, Authors, Bradd, Drinkle and Peterson all contributed a great deal to the victory. Little, playing at right wing, worked hard all the time he was on the ice and played one of his best games of the year. Ir the Kids continue to play the brand of hockey that they dished up in the last two periods last night, they will give West Toronto a real battle, In fact--well, wait and see, The Game Both teams opened cautiously, Da- vies made the first rush and Lortie followed with a nice try. Oakville took the aggressive while Oshawa waited for the breaks. Play speedcil up and Davies gave the crawd a thrill when his shot came to rdst on the top of the net... Oshawa went right back and Oshawa scored two goals in quick succession but both were offside. Davies drew the first penalty when he tripped Little as he was going in. Lortie passed to Drin- kle who shot hard but Adamson made a nice save. Thomson stopped Davies with a stiff body check. Mor- ison made a nice rush and passed to Little who almost scored. Young went clean through and missed the net. Oakville almost scored when Burr pulled some careless work on an easy shot, Lortie let a hard drive go that Adamson almost missed, The period ended with the teams no fur- Second Period Davies made a good rush, but end- ed in the corner when he lost the puck. Lortie intemepted a pass in front of the net and made a nice rush, but his pass was too hard. Ronald was given a rough ride, when he tried to go in for his own rebound Oakville made a nice rush, but got stopped at the defence, Lortie cane' right back and only Adamson's good work prevented a score. Authors scored Oshawa's first goal after thirty minutes of play, when he took the puck trom behind his own net and went all the way through and beat Adamson with a beautiful low corner shot, It was a lovely goal Oshawa were going all out at this stage. Twice Drinkle went through but Adamson made two smart saves. Bradd and Davies were both sent off, rapping each other with their sticks. The crowd was in an uproar. Lortie scored all alone, but the play was. called back. Morison drew a penalty for shoving. Oakville tried to take advantage of the penalty, but they lacked pep. The period ended with the score Oshawa I; Oakville 0. Third Period With only thirty seconds of play, Lortie stopped Ronald and went up to the centre and shot at the boards. He went in, took his own rebound and scored Oshawa's second. Oak- ville came right back and almost scored with a long shot. It hit the top of the net. Drinkle went clean through, Wot Adamson saved, ,Bradd tried to score on the rebound, but Adamson saved that too. Lortie play when he circled the defence and smashed a hard shot past Adamson for another goal. Thomson drew a penalty for tapping an opponent. Little made a nice sive when David- son went right through. Oakville put four men up and completely do- minated the play for a while, but they could not score. Davis gave Ronald a perfect pass and Ronald drew Burr out of the net and then missed the net by an inch. Oakville continued to press, but they could not score. Oshawa scored their fourth in a pretty combination play. Lortie broke through and as he came to Davies, the only.one leit on the defense, he passed to Drinkle, who 'scored with a nice shot.
