For Goals Montreal, Jan, 28.--~Ralph (Cooney) Welland, centro ice star of the champion Boston Bruins, has forgéd to the front as the leading goal-getter of the National Hockey league. according to the weekly re- turns issued last night from the offices of President Frank Calder, which include the matches of Sun- day evening last, Hee Kilrea, dash- ing left wing of Ottawa Senators, { led the scorers in the early part of the race, being finally displaced ty Nelson Stewart, rugged tentre fce sniper of the Montreal Mar- oons, The latter held away until the past week-end, when Welland forged to the front by virtue of his 'effective shooting against Chicago Hawks and New York Americans during the course of the Bruins' latest winning streak, Welland now hus notched 26 goels, as against 23 for Stewart, but on points Welland gives way to two other American division play- ers. One is Frankie Boucher, also a centre ico player, who performs for New York Rangers. Boucher has compiled 45 points in all, scor- Ing 19 goals and furnishing 26 as- sists. W. Cook Boucher's rignt wing team-mate, scored 19 goals and furnished 24 assists, Which places him seco to Boucher while Welland is in third position with 41 points, having furnished 16 assists in addition to the 25 roals he drove home. Stewart Leads Canadians American division scorers con- tinue to eclipse those of the Inter- national section by a substantial marrin, Stewart retains the lead in the Canadian, with 9 assists in ad- dition to his 23 goals for a total of 32 points, but fs only a single point in front of Kilrea. The lat- ter, figuring largely in the new lease of life taken cn by the Sen- ators, has scored 20 goals in all and given 11 assists, It is signific. ant of the improvement recently displayed by Sanators in breaking out of a long losing streak, that thoir fast-skating centre, Joe Lamb. has moved up to third position, dis- placing his team-mate Frank (King) Clancy, Although the most heavily penalized player in the ledgue, Lamb, has found time to score 15 goals and make 10 passes for goals to team-mates for a total of 25 points. Clancy is dead-lock- ed with Normie Himes of New York Americans for fourth posi- tion. Lamb's penalties aggregate 81 minutes, the largest total in either division. Ching Johnson, defence player of the Rangers, and Eddie Shore of the Bruins each have had 74 minutes and Sylvio Mantha of Canadiens 68. | Rates for | Classified Ads. "I sce no possibility of controlling these law-breaking bishops except by disestablishment," Lord Cushendun said. "We hear a lot today about the spiritual freedom of the church, do mot know what that means, but I think by spiritual freedom certain | people mean clerical freedom, If they get a tribunal manned by bishops it is. spiritual, but a tribunal manned by laymen is non-spiritual. This is not complimentary to the laity, and I think it is too flattering to the bls- hops because in my expetience there are many laymen who are completely spiritual and many bishops who are decidedly not." Board of Enquiry The Archbishop of York, Most Rev. William Temple, intends to move at the next meeting of the Church As- sembly for a commission of inquiry to investigate the relations between church and state in the light of the bishop's acceptance of the Revised Prayer Book, despite the double re- jection by parliament, Lord Cushendun offered the opin. ion expressed alrcady by so eminent a church officer as Dean Inge of St, Paul's that the Church Assembly is entirely unrepresentative of the church as a whole. When Lord Chusendun, as Ronald McNeill, was a member of the House of Commons he represented the St: Augustine division of Canterbury. But apparently the only influence--if any --of this association with so vener- |e able a centre of ccclesiasticism, was to render him one of the leading eri- tics against parliament sanction of the new Prayer Book, FRENCH WRITERS ARE BROADENING HORIZON Montreal, Que., Jan. 29---Hori- zons are broadening in French lit- erature and young writers are try- ing to get beyond national confines in their writings, said Prof. Andre Morize, Havard University , speak. ing before the Alliance Francais here. The younger generation of French writers are endeavouring to travel beyond the borders of the country, in fact to do away alto- gether with geographical and lit- erary frontiers, ie Things not French seemed in favor in France, if the literature told the true story, Dr. Morize said, Perahps the last war helped, for fast and easy transportation de- veloped a desire to go abroad 'and national frontiers seemed not so impressive. The Fronch soul in its restlessness wanted to wander away from itself, he said, In the days of Corncille, Racine and Mol- fero, the writers were satisfied with national inspiration, put from then on, foreign influences began to make themselves felt in many ways. Now this has resulted in wide interests, and the public want- ed translations of contemporary writers. . Some had turned to materialistic America, others to Russia, and still others again to tho Orient, each cWilization being praised by the writers as the best available world at present, Prof. Morize said. QUEBEC HYGIENE IS EXAMPLE TO WORLD ER Quobec, Que. Jan. 20---The hy- glene of the province of Quebec could well be set forth as an ex- J ample to many parts of the world, according to Dr. J. A. Lessard, di- rector of hygiene, at a dipner giv- en by Hon. Athanase David, prov- fucial sceretary, to the heads of the sanitary units, The affair was aftended by Pre- mier Tasthereau, members of the 'abinet and of the Lower House. Hon. Athanase David, under whose re~ime sanitary units were organiz- 1 in this province, made a review of the good work which had been icented in this province through the medium of sanitary units. He said that after all the national health was the mational wealth of any country, and what had been Gone to get the rural districts nnder the influence of san- disricts under the influence of san- itary units had proved wonderful. Todey this province was an ex- ample to other scctions of the world. Dr, Lessard said that while a | few years ago there were only 800 | feds available' for tubercular vice tims, this year there were 1,700 nd within two years he expected that about 3,000 beds would be placed at the disposal of victims of the white plague.
