KEDDIE WAS A SUCCESSFUL PUB- LISHER Began as Youth in Office of Oshawa Reformer and Owned Chain of Papers A. J. L. Keddie, a former' well- known resident and native of Osh- awa, who became a publisher of some note: in northern Michigan, died in the Wayside Hospital mn Bear Lake, Michigan, on Thursday, August 22. Mr. Keddie was head of a company known as the Keddie- print Papers, publishing a series of newspapers serving the various communities of Manishee County, Michigan. 'It is of special interest that he gained his frst knowledge of the printing and publishing business as a member of the staff of the Oshawa Reformer while a young man. The following aru- cle, telling of his life's work and death, appeared in the Bear Lake Beacon, one of his newspapers, on August 23, the day after his death: Bear Lake, August 23.--A. J. L. Keddie, editor and publisher of The Keddieprint Papers for nearly 40 years, passed away Thursday foernoon at the Wayside Home af- ter an illness of six months due to cancer. He had gone in February to the university hospital for treat- ment and an operation. Returning after two months there, he seemed to improve for a short tme but the malignant growth was not to be checked, he soon grew weaker and for the past five weeks had been unable to leave his bed, Born In Oshawa Arthur James Luke Keddie was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, August 29, 1862, his death coming just a week before the end of his 67th year. He was the eldest uf eight brothers and sitsers, all but one of whom survive him. After finishing the course in the Oshawa schools and Upper Canada Business College, he learned the printer's trade in the shop of The Oshawa Reformer and at the age of 20 started to work his way to California which was then the Mec- ca of all ambitious youths. He did not get far toward the West for af- ter short employment he became a partner with Mr. J. H. Shults in publishing The Minden City Post in the Thumb - district of Michigan. There, October 24, 1884, he mar- ried his partner's sister, Miss ¥ ira Shults. Was Successful Fire which swept the village of Minden and destroyed their plant made it necessary for the young publishers to start again in new fields. Mr. Shults came to North- ern Michigan and founded - The Bear Lake Beacon, while Mr. Ked- die found employment in Lansing. Later, Mr. Shults wishing to start The Lake Breeze at Onekama, he sold The Beacon to Mr. Keddie who took charge of it in Septem- ber, 1889, and has continued ever since, Later Mr. Shults founded the printing business at Manistee which bears his name and sold The Lake Breeze to Mr. Keddie. As other communities developed in Manistee county Mr. Keddie exten. ded the service of his newspapers to them. Small town newspaper publish- ing is in general very precarious and there are few cases where one publisher has been steadily.in one field for so long a period, especially in a community whch he entered when it was a booming lumber town but which later lost its chief industry. A never-failing optimism for Northern Michigan, for his county, his community and its peo- ple has perhaps been the secret of his long-continued service as pub- lisher. Active In Church Work Always interested in anything that promised to help, he was one of the most active in his support of community undertakings, especial- ly the Sunday school and church where his faithful attendance and vigorous activity were most mani- fest. During his sickness the people of the community have shown very plainly the sincerity of their regard for him by the great profusion of flowers that have kept his sick room aglow with color and beauty, and by their many other kindness- es.
