The girl, whose name was Caro- line Perrett, has now been discos ered living as the wife of a pros- perous native farmer in the Tane- atua district. It was believed at the time that the girl was stolen by Maoris to avenge an affront by her father, William Perrett, and the recent dramatic identification lends color to the story, Mr. Perrett with his wife took up a block of land in Lepperton after the, Maori wars. Like most of the early pioneers he had to leave is wife and family on the holding while he sought employ- ment elsewhere. In the early '70's, during the construction of the rail- way from New Plymouth to Ingle- wood, through the Lepperton dis- trict, it was found necessary to re- move the bodies of some Maoris who had been killed in the war, and which had been buried in the line of the railway track. Mr. Per- rett accomplished this task in spite of warnings from the Maoris that harm would befall 'him if tne graves were desecrated. Failure To Return Home One morning in the late summer of 1874, while Mr. Perrett was away on more railway construction work, his daughter Caroline dis- appeared from the Lepperton homestead in such a manner as to suggest that the Maoris had aveng- er the father's affront. The girl had been sent out in the morning to bring in two cows from a clearing. When she failed to return by nightfall search par- ties were organized, and with tue help of the Covernment 150 men combed the bush and creeks thor- oughly for a fortnight without re- sult. It was felt by her parents that Caroline had been stolen by Maoris, but as years went by all hopes of ever seeing her were giv- en up, although surviving members of the family never forgot their lost sister. It was left to Mrs. F. J. Hay- ward, of Taneatua, a niece of Caro- line Perrett, to make a dramatic discovery and to solve the 50-year- old mystery. Mrs, Haywood of course was familiar with the story of her lost aunt, and one day she saw a white woman with some nu- tives at Taneatau. Seizing the op- portunity to speak to her, Mrs. Hay ward said: "You are a white wom- an. What are you doing with Ma- oris?"' She received the reply, in perfect English: "I know that I am a white woman. I have been with the Maoris all my life, and I do not remember how I came to be with them. Where I come from I do not know." - Mrs. Hayward then asked her to show her neck, because she knew that when her missing aunt was quite a young child she had fallen out of a chair while asleep on w red hot bars across an open fire place; and bore on the front of her neck a mark that would last all her life. And this white woman bore that mark, thus making identifica- tion certain, although from the striking likeness to her own mo- ther Mrs. Hayward was certain that this was her missing aunt. The sisters of the missing wom- an were communicated with," and proceeded at once to Taneatua. The long-lost sister could remember Maoris taking her in an open canoe across the sea to some gum-fields near Whangarei, where she mar- ried the Maori chief, and had two children. Her husband died, and she later married another native. She has been residing for many years in the Taneatua district, her husband being a prosperous farm- er. She has had several children by her second marriage, of whom three are alive. She is living In 8 comfortable home and as she nke been living there so long, and prac. tically known no other conditions, she will continue to reside there."
