FIRE IN COAL MINE BURNS 4; TRAPS 23 Pottsville, Pa.,, Aug. 13.--Four men were severely burned, 26 were trapped in smoke-filled tunnels, and a mine fire was raging under the central part of the city last night following an explosion in the Primrose vein of the Sherman Coal company here. Owing to the layout of the mine borings, the lives of the 25 men who were caught in the workings were not believed to be in danger. They were cut off rom the main entrance of the shaft when the ex- plosion occurred, but were left with other means of escape. Phone 205 iw FLYING BOATS MAKE RISKY LANDINGS Recent Plight of Canadian Seaplane Recalls Many Such Incidents Ottawa, Aug. 13.--~The recent forced landing of Harold P. Ayres, who, after his engine failed in the middle of a 28 mile "dry hop" near Terrebonne, Que., brought a sea- plane to a safe landing in a field, recalls a number of incidents in which Canadian pilots have made remarkable landings in planes which were out of their element. The first adventure of this sort which has come to light was exper- fenced by Stuart Graham, inspector in the civil aviation branch at Ot- tawa, the first man to make a com- mercial flight in Canada, and the first man in the word to make a long cross country flight in a fly- ing boat. It was during an opera- tion in the province Graham was flying over a forest in an old type flying boat when his engine suddenly died. He took a quick look around 'and could se: nothing but trees, except in one spot where there was a small clear- ing. Graham set the nose of the machine well down and glided for it. He got down in amongst the stumps and logs without doing more than scrape the paint from the bottom of the hull of his ma- chine. Flying Officer Charles Bath, well known in the Maritimes and ip the middle west as a resourceful flier of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was flying from the Atlantic coast back to Ottawa at the end of an operation when he headed into a snowstorm and was forced to land on ice with a machine equipped with floats. He was returning from a forest dusting operation and had taken off from water in the east. As he flew further west he noticed below him more and more lakes which had become frozen over while the air became sharp and biting on his face. As he neared Megantic, where he was to refuel, a violent snowstorm struck him. For a few minutes he flew around trying to find a way out of it, but was unable to do se. He was in heavily timbered coun- try, on floats, and the lakes were all frozen. Finally he decided that he must try to get down, and glided for a small lake in among the trees. He got over it and landed on glare ice: which bent and cracked as the floats of his machine skidded over it. He ran the plane into shore and dragged it in among some willows to prevent its being blown over. That night he walked ten miles through the bush in the dark and in the violent storm to the nearest house from which he was able to telephone rather anxi- ous officials at Ottawa. One of the most astounding forced landings from which a pilot escaped with his 'life was that of W. L. Brintnell, of Winnipeg, fly- ing manager of 'Western Canada Airways, who landed a seaplane in the bush, coming down in the tree tops. The machine was practically torn to pieces, and Brintnell had considerahle ' difficulty in getting out of the cabin and climbing down a tree to the ground. ' The feat of an American pilot, William Winston, of the Curtiss Air Service, rivals that of the Canadians. Winston had been fly- ing a motion picture news photo- grapher in Canada during the win- ter. He was returning to New York with his machine equipped with skis. Somehow or other he missed the border of the snow line and found himself south of it with- out wheels. He was in a tremend- ous hurry and decided to take a chance with the result 'that he made a perfect landing on bare ground at- Curtiss Field, Long Ts- iand, without even straining the machine. NOENDINSIGHT T0 COTTON STRIK Alternative of Arbitration as a Fight To a Finish Manchester, Eng., Aug. 13.-% With practically all of the operae tives organizations steadfastly op- posed to direct negotiation as a so- lution of the Lancashire cotton stoppage and only a few of the em=~ ployers inclined to arbitration, the issue seems to resolve itself inte alternatives of arbitration or a fight to the finish. The stoppage entered its third week yesterday and as yet there is no sign of the end. Sir Horace Wilson, permanent secretary of the ministry of labor, was busy all day yesterday and on Sunday meeting individual leaders on both sides. Meetings of the cen- tral committee of the Cotton Spin- ners and Manufacturers' associa- tion and of the general committee of the Federation of Master Cotton Spinners' associations are being held today. There is good reason to believe the two bodies will consider tne question of whether they should accept the principle of arbitration as a means of settling the dispute. But it is difficult to forecast which way the decision will go. Hitherto only about one per cent of the em- ployers--those on the manufactur- ing side of the industry--are un- derstood to have favored arbitra- tion. While the Federation of Master Cotton Spinners' associations made no secret of their preference for direct negotiation the operatives have not yet given their represen- tatives power to negotiate on the question of wage reduction. . The long idleness of the cotton mills is regarded with concern throughout England, and foreign manufacturers. are said to be tak- ing advantage of the opportunity to step into the British market.
