J. Sulley, Auctioneer, a (13-19-25) $173,000 FIRE ENDANGERS LIFE AT HAMILTON Two Men Leap From Ele- vator to Escape Flames Hamilton, July 16--Hoisted by a freight elevator into the midst of the holocaust, two men were forced to smash the gates and make a wild leap for safety from flames, which later, gutted the upper portion of | the John A. Bruce and Son seed store at King and McNab streets yesterday afternoon. The loss is estimated at $175,000 to this structure and the stationery store of W. R. Turnbull, adjoining on King street. Tongues of firc from the seething furnace shot into the air and threat- ened for a time to sweep to greater destruction in the heart of the busi- ness section. Stout brick walls help- ed to confine the blaze to the building in which it originated. For three quarters of an hour the firemen had ran anxious time. Half the members | were attending a picnic in Port Dal- housie by special permission. Loss to the Bruce building is esti- mated at $35000 and to the stock, $100,000. The entire amount is cov- ered by insurance. The Turnbull stock loss is close to $40,000, entirely from water for the building was not reached by fire. Slight damage to | goods was reported by officials of G. iT, French, paper merchants, Ameri- can News company, and the Smith Barclay company, whose property ad- ! joins the Bruce building on McNab | street, also the Featherstone Safe { company on King street, : Trapped in Elevator | H. Vanswen of Ancaster, and George Blades of Homewood avenue, discovered the blaze. They were on their way to the top floor in a freight elevator when it suddenly came to a stop. Before they noticed the flames overhead they had been carried into the danger zone and had to jump for safety. The motor caused the con- flagration, it is believed. Rushing to the lower floor they turned in a fire alarm." Inflammable material includ- ing paper, cardboard cartons, etc. was stored on the third floor and the draught from the elevator fanned the blaze in the direction of the stock and before the firemen arrived, the whole top floor was a fiery furnace. "The fire originated in the elevator motor and soon caught hold on the paper cartons and other inflammable material stored on the top floor," said NV. Bruce, managing director, when interviewed. "The stock is a total loss for the water couldn't help but ruin it. "There was fully $100,000 worth of goods in the building," he added. "Reconstruction will be proceeded with and AO. and T. staff of 20 workers will not suffer through un- employment." MAY MAKE PAPER BY FISH PROCESS Saving in Cost of Producing Paper will be Effected St, Catherines --Four years sgetin a paper plant at Thorold, there was inaugurated experiments with the Fish process of making paper out of inferior wood, which today promises to culminate in success, which will mean a prolongation. of at least fifty vears of the pulpwood supply of this country. A brochure has been re- ceived 'by The Standard containing letters from the leading paper manu- facturers of the Dominion, in which the Fish process and its product are uniformly praised, not only for sal- vaging inferior wood, such as jack pine, not hitherto used, but for econ- omy in manufacture. It may be of interest for readers. of this paper that three ycars ago one whole is sue of The Standard was gotten out with paper made at Thorold under the Fish process. And it was a very good paper, well printed, Any. process by which jack pine can be made available for the manu- facture of newsprint of a satisfac« tory quality is a national boon--a measure of conservation and expan- '| processcs sion of a national resource that can- not be overlooked. Until the development of the Fish for treating pulp wood, jack pine, because of the excessive quantities of resins and gums in it, was not a desirable wood for con- version into newsprint; now it is, In Northern Ontario alone there are probably about fifteen million (15,000,000) of cords of jack pine which, by treatment under the Fish process, can be used for newsprint pulp, while to make all the jack pine in Canada available for rews- print is to effect an enormous ex- pansion of the pulp resources of the country, As adding still further to the pre- dictable life of the industry by re- forestation, it is important to re- member that new crops of jack pine can be produced more rapidly than can new crops of spruce and balsam. Four years ago (in August, 1924) the owners of the Fish processes, in- stalled pulp wood treating apparatus in the plant of the Davy Pulp and Paper Company, Limited, of Thorold, Ontario, This demonstration confirmed all expectations. proofs there obtained were on small scale, and hence were not taken as conclusively covering the whole range of conditions that must be encountered in the field of pulp and paper manufacture. Upon completion of the work at Thorold, treating apparatus was in- stalled at the Windsor Mills (Que- bec) plant of the Canada Paper Company where other conditions had to be met, Coincidently with the work of demonstration carried on in Canada, installations were made at pulp and paper making plants in the United States. It will thus be seen that nothing was left undone to place the Fish processes on a level of commercially authoritative accomplishment from which they could not be deposed. The brochure contains letters high commendation from Dr. C. D. Howe, dean of the Faculty of Edu- cation, University of Toronto, Presi- dent Babcock of the Davy Pulp and Paper Company, Thorold, Supt. Ford of the Brompton Paper Company, Quebec, E. B. Eddy, National Paper Products Company, Carthage, N.Y. the Canada Paper Company and others. The Fish product has been tried out successfully after exhaus- tive experiments and responds most satisfactorily in color and texture. Mr. L. H. Fish, who was in Thor- old for the original tests, is now located at Toronto and there is every reason to believe that his pro- cess on which a large investment has been made will come into its own. Mr. Fish claims that a great saving in the cost of paper manufacture will be cffected and he has submitted the following schedule of cost figures: The cost of sulphite pulp at Cana- dian mills is at least twice that of mechanical pulp. The Fish process- es make possible a reduction of 50 to 60 per cent of the quantity of sulphite pulp ordinarily used: Under Present Standard Methods at the Paper Machine (At Canadian mills haping cheap wood and cheap power) pc. mechanical pulp at $20 per ton 25 p.m. sulphite pulp at Per ton c..uescernnnninns see completely But the a 75 Under Fish Patented Processes at the Paper Machine pc. mechanical pulp (spruce and , balsam) at $20 per ton Saving effected per paper Less cost of treating wood by Fish processes ...... A saving of from $4 to $5.60 per ton on the Canadian output of news- print in the year 1926 alone would have aggregated from $7,000,000 to $10,000, SOVIET WORKS FOR UPHEAVAL IN NDI Moscow Paper Suggests Pea- sants on Verge of Revolution London.--The prospects of a peas- ant revolution in India are frequent- ly discussed in the Soviet Press, lz- vestia recently in a survey of the pre- sent conditions in India, refers to the existence of "an industrial pro- letariat 4,000,000 strong," and pro- ceeds :-- The Peasant class thus obtains®a powerful ally, and for the first time in its history has acquired a leader and ruler in its struggle for India's liberation. It is only when the cen- turies-old, pent-up elemental forces of peasant resentment are welded to- gether under the sober organized leadership of the proletariat that the long-drawu-out struggle of the Indian peasants will achjeve its object, The question now is (continues Iz- vestia) wiether Imperialism, employ- ing ruthless terrorism with occasional sops to the national bourgeoisie, will succeed in disrupting the movement and isolating and strangling the pro- letariat before the peasamt masses of India rise in revolt. That is one of the crucial questions which the most competent servitors of British capital are straining their brains to solve, and which re-acts on British policy in all countries adjacent to India, and looked upon in London as fier States-- Persia, Afghanistan, Tibet. lzvestia declares that it was the peasant class which suffefed mast after the suppression of what it des- cribes as the "revolution of 1919-22." the peasants were betrayed by Ghandi and delivered to the mercies of Bri- tish tax collectors and national land- lords. The agrarian revolution was crushed for the time being, for the peasants werc as yet incapable of organizing themselves, and their un- ions had worked out no concise pro=« gram of action. On the other hand, "it has to be admitted that British politicians learned a good deal from their experiences in the revolution of 1919..... The bureaucratic machinery of British Imperialism is working well and with precision." The newspaper considers, nevertheless, that British Imperialism finds itself, so far as the agrarian problem is concerned, be- tween the devil and the deep sea, for the policy of "tacking" by throwing alternate sops to the landlords or peasants will only prolong matters and feed the smouldering flames of the coming general conflagration. The exact conditions of peasant leader- ship or the organized forms of the peasant movement are still obscure, i concludes, but one thing is certain-- the five years' slumber of the Indian peasants is over, and rural India is on the verge of a mighty upheaval. Pravda quotes with satisfaction an article by the Bombay correspondent of the Berliner Tagceblatt, in which he says that "the contour of Lenin is standing out more and more clearly on the Indian horizon." Pravda ex- presses the conviction that "class war in India has entered on a new stage, The barricades are drawn; the mass- es of toiling peasants led by ths proletariat are arrayed on the one side, facing the British Imperialists, supported by the national bourgeoisie, on the other..... The hour of récle oning is drawing nigh." aS A few caressing touches of Persian Balm--your skin is softand satiny, glowing with radiant health. Soothes sun- burn and beautifies the com- plexion.
