REDS RAIDED IN CASTLE IN FRANCE Notorious Agitator Found in Secret Cupboard Unde: Staircase Paris, June 27.--A dramatic raid by detectives recently surpris ed the French Communist General Staff in secret council in an old castle at Acheres, about 12 miles from Paris, and led to the arrest of a notorious agitator named Tho- rez. He has been sought for more than two years to serve a term of nine months' imprisonment for se- ditious propaganda. . The Communist leaders, who ine cluded M. Marcel Cachin, the Red member of Parliament; M:. Sem- ard, M. Monmousseau, and several other party, had been holding a sort of council of war before the police broke into the castle. A green baize-covered table was littered with papers, and there were the remains of a sumptuous repast in what was formerly the dining-room of the mansion, .Bot- tles of the finest liquors were on the table, and the meal would ap- parently have done credit to the finest restaurant in Paris. Red guards had been mounted as sentries around the castle, which is isolated in the woods. SEVEN YEARS WITH WRONG HUSBAND Tangle of Mistaken Indentity Brought to Light Suddenly Portsmouth, England --One of the strangest marriage tangles on record has just come to light here. For seven years a Portsmouth woman, Mrg. Lavinia Ann Sheels, has lived with a man whom she be- lieved to be her husband, only to discover that he is actually a stran, ger whose real name she does not know. This remarkable matrimonial drama begins seven years ago when Mrs. Sheels' husband, an Austral- ian, left home and did not return. Hearing from a friend that a ' man answering his description had been seen in a dazed condition in Boulogne, she went in search of him, 'and. discovered that he was suffering from logs of memory and ; was unable to recognize her. She brought him back to Eng- land, where he gradually became more normal, though his mind still remains a blank as to what hap+ pened prior to his breakdown, The couplé, who have now two children, lived happily together un- til recently, when Mrs. Sheels discovered, to her horror and amazement, that she had made a remarkable mistake in identificas tion, and that the man she rescuea from Boulogne is not her husband at all. A letter arrived from her real husband who, it appears, is in Aus- tralia and now wants his wife to go out to join him. "I nearly dropped when 1 open- ed the envelope," Mrs. Sheels told me. "There can he no doubt about its authenticity, for 1 wonld recog- nize my husband's - writing any- where. : "I have made a terrible mis- take, but even now I can scarcely believe it. It seems impossible that my 'husband'--I can't call him anything else--isn't my husband at all. When I found him in Bou- logne I had no doubts about his" identity, and I have never had a doubt until this letter arrived." "I don't Intend to give up my present 'husband'." Mrs. Sheels said. 'He is the father of my two children, and we have always got on well together. The only thing is for my husband in Australia to divorce me." But the real problem of this astonishing tangle is: Who is the second Mr. Sheels?
