RAY KEECH WINS 1300 NILE AUTO RAGE Twelve Drivers Only, Out|! of Thirty-three Finish Race PRIZE OF $40,000 Indianapolis, Ind., May 31.-- Death and destruction were strewn in the wreckage of that scorching torch called the 500-mile automo- bile sweep-stakes at the Indian- apolis motor speedway yesterday. With a record-smashing "crowd of 160,000 viewing the spectacle, Ray Keech, daring 28-year-old driver of Philadelphia, boynced his tiny eight cylinder racing crea- tion past the finish tape, a winner in 5:07:25:42. Louis Meyer of Los Angeles, winner of the 1928 race, finished second, nearly six min- utes behind, with Jimmy Gleason, another Philadelphia driver, pull- ing up in third place. Twelve of the 33 drivers who started survived the terrific test of speed. Keech averaged 97.583 miles an hour, a performance that did not even threatda speed rec- ords for the race. The race resulted in the death of William Spence, 24-year-old driver of Los Angeles, and the miraculous escape of five other drivers. Spence, bounding over the perilously bumpy 23%-mile brick course at terrific speed, was killed when on his 40th mile. As he was shooting out of a turn his car struck a retaining wall on a skid, threw Spence into the air, turned completely over, and then came to a stop far down the track. Spence was 24 years old and married. He was a relief driver for William Arnold in the race last vear and finished seventh. Spence was a new-comer in major race competition. Prize of $40,000 Keech, as a resuit of his victory, wag enriched to the extent of about $40,000. He won $20,000 as first prize. $5,100 in lap prizes and the balance in cash prizes of- fered by accessory manufacturers. Today's race was Keech's second major competition. He finished fourth in the 1928 race, coming here after gaining fame by setting a new world's record of 207.565 miles an hour on the beach at Day- tona, Fla. Before that he was an unsung, small-time, dirt track driver around Philadelphia. Before the first hundred miles were finished, Ralph Hepburn, veteran driver, and Peter de Paolo, winners of the 1925 race and a favorite to repeat today, had' been forced out of the race along with Cliff Woodbury of Chicago, an- other favorite, Hepburn was forced out at 35 miles by a broken steer- ing gear. De Paolo went out with the same difficulty on hig 62nd mile. Jules Moriceau, of Paris, one of the two foreign drivers in the race, turned over coming into the stretch just before the 100 mile mark was reached. The car was Moriceau was only escaped slightly smashed, but death, He scratched. 'Woodbury was forced out of the race almost at the start when his car crashed into the wall as he was turning into the stretch*at the northwest end of the track. Wood- bury miraculously escaped death. His car, however, was wrecked. He was on his third lap at the time of the crash. Woodbury escaped with' only a shaking up. Deacon Litz, who had led most of the way from the start, ran off the track on the northeast turn, He was unhurt, but his machine was so badly damaged he had to give up the grind. Previous to the accident, Litz had won about $5,000 in lap prizes, getting $100 for each lap he won, CADDY I$ KILLED BY DRIVEN BALL Fatality Attends New York Golfers in First Game of Season New York, May 31.--Adolph Sodowski, 12, of Ozone Park, Queens, a caddy on the public golf links in Forest park, Richmond Hill, died of a skull fracture to- day a short time = after being struck in the left eye by a golf | ball. ALERT OPERATOR AVERTS PAN Audience File Out Quietly When Movie Takes Fire Toronto, May 31.--Silently and os. derly, a crowd estimated at about 200 persons and including many chil- dren, walked out of the Greenwood theatre, at 1275 Gerrard street cast last night when fire: broke out in the film projection machine. Through the alertness of the oper- ator, Thomas Brown, the only film burned was the roll in the machine at the time of the outbreak, accord- ing to police. Brown, using the fire extinguisher kept in the projection room, had the blaze practically out when the firemen arrived. The fire was caused, it is believed, by a twist in the film. "The show is over for tonight-- there's been a break in the mach- ine," was the explanation given the audience when the screen suddenly went dark shortly after 10 o'clock. P. C. Jones, who turned in the al- arm, watched the theatre empty, as- suring the patrons that there was no danger. Without any sign of pa- nic, he told The Mail Phi Lal of they took their hats and walked out, Hardly were they out, however, be- fore the theatre was filled with smoke and firemen, entering the projection booth, were forced to don their masks An hour later, the acrid smoke still hung in the theatre although all the docrs had been thrown open to clear it out, ---- a elt Bres. 1 he LEADING JEWELEP Eotabished 188 12 Simcoe St. South | _ 18 Simeos Streat South 4 FOR RENT Bonniebrae Cottage, Bonnie. brae Point, Oshawa, City water, electric range, all con. veniences, two fireplaces, large screened porches, 2 car garage, Ample accommoda- tion.
