B. k drew the attention of the Sen- recently to the desirability of structing a canal across the Isth- mus of Chignecto. Mr. Black said fis was the oldest canal project in rth America, as it was first pro- ed and submitted to the French ernment in 1686. In 1874 $1,000,- 000 was put in the estimates, but bsequently under the Mackenzie ernment the estimated cost of $4,- 000,000 was considered too great at the time, owing to financial depres- sion. : The demand for the ship canal was replaced by a proposal for a | ship marine railway. A British com- pany undertook this work which was nearly completed, when the com- y's bankers became involved in ancial difficulties and the work ceased. Subsequently, an application was made to Parliament for the ex- tension of this charter, which was re- | fused. Mr. Black said that in all, Can- ada has spent $272,000000 on other canals and not one dollar on the Chignecto proposal which was a part of the Confederation agreement, Reduce Sailing Distance : In support of the proposal, he said this canal would reduce the sailing | distance between the St. Lawrence and the Bay of Fundy by 400 miles. It would also bring the North Shore of KARN THE DRUGGIST FOR SERVICE PHONE 378. NEXT THE POST OFFIO TIME TABLES | i CPR. Two days' sail- ing would be saved which would mean lessening the cost by $2,000, in addition to reducing freight rates and insurance. He said it would also stimulate the building stone trade and coal trade of the Maritime Pro- vinces and would be of benefit to On- tario and Quebec. He asked that engineers. report on the feasibility and if found practicable that it be built at once. He also thought that it would be open for navigation for nearly the whole year, Hon, J. Logan said that it was over 100 years since the first survey. The Chignecto canal had been part of the Confederation agreement at the Quebec conference and one of the inducements held out to the Maritime Provinces. After Confed- eration, it had been approved, as be- ing of vital importance by the com- missfon on canals, Although $100,- 000,000 was being spent on the Wel- land Canal, this, the oldest canal pro- ject, had not received one dollar of Government assistance. He asked that the Confederation Pact be im- plemented in this 'regard, Mr. Logan said that $4,000,000 had been spent on the marine ship rail- way. Parliament had refused to ex- tend the charter. The canal project was now being revived and was strongly endorsed by the business in- terests of the Maritime Provinces, The Minister of Railways had agreed to have the project investigated. Mr. Logan suggested that the investiga- tion be by a commission of three. The canal would be 18 miles long, through a practically level country. The criticism that fogs would render navigation difficult was not borne out by sea captains who said there was less fog in the Bay of Fundy than in the Strait of Canso, He was con- fident if this canal was built it would improve trade between the Maritime Provinces and Ontario, by shortening the distance and lowering the rates. : Senator Dandurand said the canal project has probably been delayed by the adoption of the marine ship rail- way scheme. The failure of this scheme had dampened the spirit of the canal advocates. For years, the pleas of the bond holders of the ship railway had been before Parliament. Senator Dandurand pointed out that this new proposal had not even been placed before the Duncan Comission, He believed there might be virtue in the scheme and the Government would make an exhaustive enquiry to ascertain its merits, In reply to Senator Robertson, Sen- ator Black said the Iintercolonial Railway had never been a substitute for the canal, nor had any of the en- gineers raised any question of diffi- culties in the way of the success of the canal. 12 Year Old Again Champion Cattle Raiser in All B. C. Kamloops, B.C., April 23.--This year's champion cattle raiser in British Columbia is little Annie Turner, twelve year old daughter of James Turner, Cadboro Bay stock breeder. Her 14-months old Shorthorn steer, sired by Braidhill Marquis and weighing around 1100 pounds, won the grand champion- ship of all breeds at the Kamloops bull sale and fat stock show. But winning trophies for live stock is no novelty for Annie Tur. ner with cups and other trophies galore, This year she will again enter her animal in the Calgary and Ed- monton shows and hopes to repeat her success of last year when she won the championship at those places. Although oil of good quality has been proved at Motu- roa, up till now boring has attain- and intermittent flows. The best known bores, the Tarata and the Moturoa, were sunk to 5,010 and 4,360 feet respective- ly without, however, striking pay- able oll. In June, 1926, a blow-out occur- red at Moturoa, the gas coming up in great quantity, smelling of oil and a dense, black cloud enveloped the works, but the steady flow of oil recently struck is the most im- portant in the history of the fields. There is a theory that the pros- pects of finding payable oil in New Zealand are better than in Aus- tralia due to a supposed ofl belt which passes through Burma and the East Indies, taking a wide sweep through New Guinea and Telephone 572-223 Night Calls 510-1560 $350 Lots in Dearborn Park sub-division for sale, Just west of Simcoe St. N.
