Ro- dolphe Lemieux will retain the speakership, messengers will not visit the vendors for thirsty com- moners, and the police will con- tinue to patrol the corridors. This was the outcome of the secret ses- sion of 90 minutes yesterday. There may be® some relaxation of the edict on messengers and police, but Mr. Lemieux's sonorous tones will continue to call the members to order. When the commons met in sec- ret session, Speaker Lemieux made an impassioned address, calling upon the commeners to sustain him in his rulings, and his posi- tion, which he declared he would resign if there was not a strong expression of confidence given by the commoners, Speaker Lemieux's appeal was a great oratorical effort, more par- ticularly when the minor character of the issues at stake are consid- ered. But his eloquence and threat of resignation did not entirely prevent criticism. Those who had been loudest in condemnation of his acts, and who had threatened they would have his scalp, were absent, or silent. Western Progressive members rushed to the Speaker's defence, and there were some sharp interchanges between the members. Conservatives Silent All this time Conservative mem- bers remained silent, but amused spectators. The prime minister gave assurance to the Speaker he had the confidence of the house, but referred to the non-particiva- tion of the Conservatives in the discussion. Hon. R. B. Bennett told the prime minister that the trouble was in the Liberal and not the Conservative party. The issue had been raised in the Liberal cause and not by Conservatives, who had no part in it. It was a family row in the Liberal party and was up to them to settle it. The Speaker then called for an expression of approval of his course and there was a chorus of "Yeas." When disapproval was called there was but one solitary "nay" and that from the government side, but the identity of this lone hero has not been divulged. He was content with this simple registration of his disapproval. The Speaker thanked his fai'hful commoners for their expression of confidence, and the commons went into supply--not from the vendors.
