On Tuesday evening a large crowd attended the Young People's Sociéty of the United Church to hear John Dryden present his speech on "Can- ada among the Nations," which he is giving in the provincial oratorial contest to be held soon in Toronto, He was highly somplimented by the chairman, Mr. H, Mackay, and all who heard him. About one hundred and fifty sat down to a men's banquet in the base- ment of the United Church last Thursday evening. After doing jus- tice to the nificent supper catered to by the ladies of the church, a varied and interesting program of toasts and 2 eches took place, The . L. Jull, acted as toast- master and first proposed to "The King;" Mr, Gordon Ego proposed the toast to "The Press," which was fittingly replied to by G. M. Good- fellow, editor of the Whitby Gazette and Chronicle. The toast to "The Church" was proposed by W. A, Dry- den who in his usual able manner told of the important part the Chris- tian church takes in the community and national life of the country. This was resporided to by Rev. J. M. Ped- ley, noted minister of Toronto, who delivered one of the most versatile, witty and stirring speeches heard in Brooklin for some time. His main idea centred around the point that the Divinity of Jesus and practically following Him is the main belief in the religion known as Christianity, Miss Marjorie Allems of Toronto spent the week end at her home, Miss Hilda Mackey spent the week end with friends in Toronto, Mr. and Mrs, G. S. White and son Donald spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs, C. L. Mackey, Miss Ross and Miss Carscadden are spending their Easter holidays at their respective home at Lindsay and Cannington. The Women's Auxiliary of the Church of the Ascension is holding its annual Easter tea and sale of home-made cooking in the parish Bal on Saturday afternoon, April The sympathy of this community is extended to Mrs. Fred Moore and family in their recent bereavement. Mr, Moore died on Tuesday, March 26, as the result of a fall from the roof of Mr. Alvin Hunter's house in Prince Albert. The funeral took place from St, John's Presby- terian church cn Friday afternoon. Interment was in Pine Grove cem- etery. Besides his widow Mr, Moore is survived by five children: Mrs. Jackman, of Bowmanville; Mrs. Jillard, of Toronto; Mr. Er- nest Moore, of Lindsay, and Misses Lydia and Phoebe, of Toronto. The church was. filled to its capacity, and the Sons of England, of which Mr, Moore was a member, were in attendance, Mr. George Mowatt, of Toronto, was the guest of Port Perry friends over the week-end, Miss Edith Peters, of Sadowa, is with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A, D. Peters, for the holiday. Miss Joyce Nind and Mr. Philip Nind ot Toronto were home for the week-end. The play, 'Arnold Goes into Business," which was to have been presented at the town hall on Monday night has had to be post- poned until' Wednesday, April 10, owing to the condition of the roads. Mr. Clinton Short of Toronto was home for the week-end. Miss Frances Mellow of Toronto is spending a few days with her mother. In the last correspondence, an error was made in the report of the twin babies of Mr, and Mrs. Lane. The twins are boys and all are doing well, and the parents live at Ford City instead of Walkerton, as the reporter had been informed. Easter Services were well at- tended. Sunday services were fit- tingly eppropriate. Both afternoon and evening was most impressive. Rev. Mr. Bunmner, of Bowmanville, as usual, had charge of the serv- ices, The collections were gener- ous and will be halved with the missionaries. At the evening serv- ice, four little girls, Frances Alex- ander, Olive Taylor, Grace and Ruby Warren sang a quartette.
