Has Novel Non-Stalling Safety Feature Yeovil, Somerset, Mar. 21--Back a million years to the Mesozoic per- iod when the air was peopled with those weird flying monsters, the featherless Ptrodactlyls, science now has gone in its latest attempt to solve the problem of safe flight. Whether the full solution has been reached is still a question but cer- tain. it is that a wholly new form of airplane has been designed and flown. This new type of airplane known ag the '"Pterodactyl" has been de- veloping many years under the di- rection of Capt. G. T. R. Hill, late of the Royal Air Force. During the last three years, Capt. Hill has been making successful flights with experimental machines, dif- fering in detail, but all embodying the same principle of construction;" namely, a tailless monoplane wing driven by a pusher propeller, and having a peculiar form of wing construction that practically elim- inates any possibility of the ma- chine stalling in the air. Hill, a six-foot, broad- shouldered Englishman who serv- ed through the great war, and has flown nearly every type of machine 'that has appeared in England since 1914, told the United Press corres- pondent that aside from the safety of the new Pterodactyl type of ma- chine, it was immensely more fun to fly than the present tractor type of machine which has the engine and propeller in front instead of behind one as in the Pterodactyl. "It gives you somewhat the feel- ing of flight on. a Magic Carpet," said Capt. Hill. "You are sitting out in front in a cockpit with the wing and the engine behind you. Instead of the hot air and ofly smell and noise of the engine being driven back on you by the turbulent blast of the propeller, the air comes back in a smooth even rush and is mostly deflected over your head by the windshield so that at 90 miles an hour there is little more dis- comfort from the wind in the Pter- odactyl than at 60 miles an hour in an open touring car. Also in- stead of running into the noise of your engine, you are running away from it, so that here again on the score of noise the Pterodactyl has a great advantage over airplanes driven by tractor propellers. I've done a small bit of flying at one time or another, but I've never had greater. enjoyment out of it than in flying at low altitudes and' 'hedge-hopping' across country in the Pterodactyl. You felt you were really flying." Capt. Hill said that tests had shown that the machine would de- scend "pancake'"--from any height at an angle of 40 degrees to the perpendicular, the wing surface re- maining all the while on an even keel. "It will do this," he sald, ""with- out .any danger of a stall. This means that with any sort of wind blowing, as low even as ten or fif- teen miles an hour, the machine will come to a rest on the ground without any appreciable forward run.
