Frnal Wave i : v THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, GIVES PERSONAL SIDELIGHTS INTO "HEN OF AFFAIRS" English Author Acclaimed for Splendid Manner in Treating Politicians (By Canadian Press) London, Eng, Dec. 7~The "per- sonal touch" in discussing men who matter in affairs at large is very much the fashion with writers (and presumably with their readers) just now. In "The Real Men in Public Life" just published by Collins, A. P. Nicholson not only gives the per- sonal touch, but some sidelights on recent political history, Mr, Nichol- son is one of the most axpeslénced journalists who walk the bby of the House of Commons, and has more than a few outstanding "scoops" to his credit. His book is interesting not only for the author's estimate of the characters of leading parliamentary figures but also for some of the innocent revelations con- cerning certain notable events. Premier Stanley Baldwin, as we all know, precipitated an election on the Tariff issue in 1923 and it put his party into opposition for a twelve- month. Most people thought this el- ection was primarily brought about at the instigation of Rt. Hon. L. C. Amery, then first Lord of the Ad- miralty. According to Mr. Nichol- son, however, Neville - Chamberlain was really responsible. "Mr, Amery had nothing to do with it," says Mr. Nicholson. "The decision to go all out for a general tariff in that election came as a sur- prise to him. With regard to Mr. Baldwin's suc- cession to the Premiership, Mr. Nich- olson says: "Bonar Law, when he was nearing his end, foresaw that Stanley Baldwin would become the leader of their party but felt that he needed a little more experience. Mr, Bonar Law, when he resigned the Premiership was adamant in refus- ing to name his successor. The King, I have heard, was obliged to make inquiries through other channels." Of the Prime Minister's personal character Mr, Nicholson says he has shown himself, right or wrong, a man of determination and decision, "The United States debt settlement, in which I think he was too hasty, the defeat of the General Strike, and the defence of the British at Shang- hai, srslgan ificant instances." Of Rt. Hon. David Lloyd George, the author says he seems today to excite more 'antagonism than loyal- ties. "Had not Lloyd George in his life of furious endeavor been self- centered, and determined to subor- dinate all conflicting factors to his aim of personal success, he would not have been able to serve his fel- low-countrymen as he did. It seems to me that in his consuming ambi- tion were burnt up some of the finer things of life--friendship, generosity, kindness." : Mr, Nicholson comes to the con- clusion that Rt. Hon, Ramsay Mac- donald's desire to appear bold in ac- tion. is neutralized by an excess of Scettish caution. "His paralyzing fear of making a mistake, and lack of belief sometimes in his own argu- ment, are coupled with a paradoxi- cal reliance on his unaided judge- ment. In the result he sometimes gives the impression of insincerity." Altogether the book contains nearly thirty character sketches of "The Real Men in Public Life." According to a Massachusetts ex- pert persons' eyes can be seriously injured by the wearing of visor caps of certain colors, red ones being especially injurious. SIMCOE ST. Ami, of Ottawa, who, for 15 years of his connection with the Geological Sur- vey of Canada, had charge of Arch- aeology and ethnology for the Dom- inion, The year's work consisted of Excavations at Combe-Capelle, in the Valley of the Couze, near Les Ey- zies in the Dordogne. A fine series of Palaeolithic im- plements illustrating the industries of Early Man on this 'planet were uncovered and carefully labelled and packed after inspection by the French Government's © Administrator, Monsieur Peyrony. At Le Moustier the Canadian School discovered rare and hitherto unrecorded implements and strata deposited during the hu- man occupation of those sites; at Longueroche, Cro de Biscot and Les Eyzies, new facts were discovered which will throw light upon the An- tiquity of Man, and show through what trials and vicissitudes man passed to reach the degree of ad- vancement and regress of today. Great floods and fires, volcanic dis- turbances and outbursts of glacial dams and deep waters, are clearly read from the facts observed. The party on its return to Canada will continue the work of distribut- ing collections from Europe, Asia and Africa, obtained by the Canadian School to the Museums of the Uni- versities of Canada, and to the Na- tional Museum of Canada at Ot- tawa., When connected to an electric lighting circut a Milwaukee doc- tor"s motor move a baby carriage backward and forward a few feet to put its occupant to sleep. "Luggers," large craft built especial- ly for the liquor trade, were used, enabling the transportation of large cargoes on each trip. Little of the liquor is being intro- [Jee duced into the regular trade, it be- ing, for the most part, stored in warehouses to wait the high prices that the holiday season is expected to bring. Today for a time, when it became known that additional Customs Pa- trol Inspectors . had been arrested, the runners "lay out" for a few hours, sending across only occasion- al well-guarded boats. Along to- ward dusk; however, residents along the river front noticed several boats leave the Canadian side and hover in mid-stream, apparently waiting darkness, Today only persons well known to the runners were allowed to approach the river bank while operations were going on, as a re- porter and photographer learned when they attempted to investigate the situation, ) Do You Own Your Own ATHING .
