There is a whole serm sermon in the follow- | ing {paragraph from the Moutreal Star, which it would be well for those interest od to refd, yoke, { learn, and inwardly digest." ' * The aversion Young Canada has to ~agricultural or mechanical pursuits is not - calculated to advance the interests of the Dominion. Canada has great need of strong arms and willing hearts just now, Her present supply of full grown lawyers, doctors, and ** clerks" is more than suffiei- ent for a good many years yet, and were some kind]fairy'to transform the coming prolific brood into embryoartisans or farm- ers, the change would be as' profitable to the country as to the man. It is a great pity that are so led away by ap- pearances, and the silly notions of theip children as nt to their augmenting bo large list of half-taught, aimless, an often dissolute beings, who drag through life under the title of 'professional men." Our cities are full of "these human wrecks; and every lyear sees large additions to the sorry crowd." We do not wonder that the recent cen. sus shows such a small increase in the pop- ulation of the country, when we see so many of our young men deserting agri- eultural and mechanical pursuits through the mistaken idea that they can make 'money easier, or because they have got a notion into their heads that it is a little more respectable tobe a lawyer, or doctor, or merc d finding out their mis- take when if is toolate, are too proud to 8° back to the occupation which nature de- signed them for, country to hide their failure or remain to become burdéns on their friends orsociety. Tt is altogether a mistake to imagine, be. cause a farmer or a mechanic may happen to be able to educate his sons as lawyers [ and doctors, they will be successful as such ; in a few isolated cases they may be, _ but in the great majority they will learn when possibly it is too late to retrace their - steps that they were wrong somewhere in thejr calculations. A large proportion of the young men who leave the country every year will, we think, be found te be " of that class of persons who, having mis- in 'life, try to hide their former associates When I used to "tend store in Syracise; | the old man came round one day, and says he: | " Boys, [the one that sells the most be- tween now and Christmas gets a vest pat- tern as a present." Maybe we didn't wark for that vest pat- ern as a present! I tell you there were me pretty tall stories teld in praise of {goods just about that time ; but the tallest talker, and the one that had 'the most cheek of any of us, was a certain Jonah 8quires, who roomed with me. He could talk a dollar out of a man's pocket when the man only intended to spend sixpence ; and the women, they just handed over their pocket-bogks to him ; and let him lay out what he liked for them. One night Jonah woke me up with, "By "Jo, old fellow, if you think that ere's got eotton in it, I'll bring down the sheep that it'was cut from, and 'make him own his | wool. Twon't wear out, either: wore a pair of pants of that stuff five years, and they are as good new as when I first put them on. Take it at thirty cents and I'll say you don't owe me anything. Eh, too dear? Well, call it twenty-eight cents, -- What d'ye say ? Shall Itearit? All right it's a bargain." I could feel Jonah's hand playing about |- the bed-clothes for an instant, then rip tear w thing of other, and I hid my h # the' blankets, perfectly eonvulsed with-laughter, and sure that Jonah had torn the best sheet from top to bottom. When I awoké the next morn- ing I found that the back of my might shirt was split from tail to collar band. PRESERVING EGGS. = There seems to be a great diversity of opinion about packing eggs for preserva- tion. As we have giv: mode of sev- eral readers who think their manner is the best, we clip the following from the New York Obsercer of a recent date, giving its experience: " The most convenient and satisf, tokeep eggs fresh that we ever te punch numerous holes | in a tin pail, f "ll it with fresh eggs, lower | the pail with the eggs into a kettle of melt- ed tallow, which is as hot as can be with- out burning one's finger when thrust into the liquid ; then lift the pail out quickly, and the melted tallow will flow oat leav- ing | a thincoating over every egg. "Let the eggs be removed as . soon as possible from the pail, and placed on the ends in a keg or barrel, which should be kept in a cool cellar until wanted for-useom 'We have kept eggs in this mannerformore than six months; so fresh that expertjudges supposed they were fresh. As the eggs are so myich cojder than themelted tallow, a thin pelliele bf cold tallow will be form- od almost instantly, which will render the shell impervious to air." Pxzsoxs who have become thoroughly chilled from any cause, may "have their lation at once d by taking into © the stomach & teaspoonfelof Johnson's An- edyne Liniment mixed in a little cold wat- or, well sweetened. Every farmer who owns & good stock of horses, cattle and sheep, and intends to keep them through the winter, should get | at once a good stock of Sheridan's Cavalry Condition Povoders. . One dollar's worth will save at least a half ton of hay. ~ Tas Question Serriep.~ Those emin- ont men, Dr. James Clark, .Physician to Queen Victoria, and Dr. Hughes Bennett, say that consumption can be cured. Dr. 'Wistar knew:this when he diseovered his "mow widely known Balsam of Wild Cherry, and experience has proved the correctness of his opinion. ~ Dm. Bung, in reviewing the statistics of deaths from, cholem, finds that out of sbout 33,000 wtisans in dpper, brass and bronze employed in Paris and other cities during the last outbreak of cholera, only 16 deaths resulted from that disease. An- other interesting fact bearing on this ques- tion is that the city Mio-Tinto, surround- od as it is by copper mines, has never been visited by this epidemic.
