"GENERAL HOSPITAL IS GROWING INSTITUTION Probably no institution in Oshawa is deserving of more hearty recogni- tion than the .General Hospital, While in its infancy, it was more or less of a struggle on the.part of a few of the most influential and en- ergetic citizens of the town it has now become one of the most efficient and modern institutions of its kind "n the province of Ontario. The initiative was originally taken uy the Ladies' Hospital Auxiliary which purchased the site where the hospital now stands, . They received little encouragement but finally a w citizens became 'interested and v..h their support the first building s28 erected in 1910, Its rapid srowth since that time reflects a great deal of credit on those who headed the Hospital Board, To Mr. J. D, Storie goes a large share of the credit, When the first huilding was constructed without the aid of an architect's advice he superintend- ed the construction thereby saving much expense and making it possible for Oshawa to have this much need- cd building. A few years later the Pedlar Sur- gical Wing was erected, it being the ¢'ft of the_late Geo. H. Pedlar, Sr. ne Oshawa Hospital Board at the ame time erected what was known : the connecting link which includ- +d the sun room and the elevator. Following close upon this addi- on, the Ladies' Auxiliary built the 1>ses' residence on Alexandra eet also a separate building to be ed as a laundry. The latest ex- sion to the nurses' residence was de only last year when the build- g was almost doubled in size. This ension cost approximately $16,000 d was paid for by the Ladies' uxiliazs, % X-Ray Equipment A little more than a year ago the ae Ladies' Auxiliary purchased an X- ray machine together with certain equipment which was immediately installed and put into operation, The complete equipment was expensive, it being of the latest design and equal to that used in any of the larger hospitals, Since then the machine has been used extensively and has proved to be invaluable to lacal physicians, About the same time new, electric ranges were: installed to replace the old ranges although the latter were not removed, both being used as oc- casions demand. , The hew ranges added greatly to the efficiency of the hospital. : Memorial Wing However, not the least important undertaking in the history of the hospital is, the erection of the new maternity wing which will shortly be completed, This wing which has deen long needed is being donated by Messrs. R. 8. and Geo, W. Mec- Laughlin as a memorial to their father, the late Robert McLaughlin, This addition will greatly relieve the congestion which has been experienc- ed in the past, A fitting opening is being planned to take place in three or four weeks' time, the date to he announced later, Quite a number of local residents have asked to be permitted to fur- nish a' room or rooms in the new structure, and in connection with this Dr. J. D. Storie, president of the Board of Directors, during the course of an interview K with The Reformer stated that the people of Oshawa had been very good to the hospital, He described the new wing as she greatest addition in the his- tory of the institution. Mr. Storie told The Reformer that plans 'had been completed to take out the stairway which runs to the top of the building commencing just inside the main entrance, This set of stairs, he sald, was not fireproof and after removed, the space on the 'ground floor would be converted into a' walting room whilgy on the second and third floors yrds will replate the space where the stairs is now. In the new wing and in the Pedlar wing the stairways are pro- tected with fireproof doors, the en- tire stairway in the'; MeLaughlin Memorial wing being strictly fire- A Christmas Tragedy proof. | Mr. Storie also intimated that the Board: was considering adding an- other half story to .the original building so that it would be of the same height as the wings, The hos- pital, Mr Storie added, when im- provements were completed and the new wing in use would rank as one of the best equipped in the Province. The annual meeting of the Hos- pital Board will be held on Tues- day, December 12th when the year's work' will be reviewed 'and plans for the future discussed. A year ago,a woman wanted to send a little reminder to a couple of children and, in lieu of anything better being avablable, sent them a hin plaster (26cts.), asking them to get some little treat for them- gelves with it. Their mother, being of a thrifty turn, added five cents to it, which gave them fifteen cents a- piece, and had them put same in the bank to their respective, accounts. Never again. This year a box of dominoed is being sent to the same children and it will bother the ma- ternal parent to get THAT in the ~ Authors a EE a (Houston Chronicle) Many an author is indebted to the Bible for a title to a novel.
