"The Four Horsemen" is the sup- me expression of the Great War. ertainly no' novel has stirred the universal appeal created by the Ibanez masterpiece. The book, now in its one hundred and sixty-sixth | edition, has been read throughout the world. The monumental task of transferring it to the screen was ac- complished by June Mathis, who | made a scenario that from all aec- | counts has preserved the force of the | original and in many incidents | heightened it. But it is the direec- tor, Rex Ingram, who has apparent- | ly achieved the most sensational suc- | cess. He is reported to have set a | new mark in artistry of picturiza- | tion. Readers of the novel will recall | that the story opens on the Argen- tine ranch of old Madariaga, whose | territories are as extensive as those | of the great independent barons of | feudal times. And Madariaga rules with feudal power. A rioting, roy- stering despot, he is filled with Cas- tilian pride of family and yearns for | a male child to carry on his tradi- | tion. His two daughters have mar- | ried ranch employees--one French and the other German. Madariaga's | Latin antipathy to the German son- in-law brings with it a dislike of his half-German grandchildren, but when a son is born to the French- man, Desnoyers, the old man finds his dream realized. The young Prince has been prepared under the direction of a rugged Uncle to suc- ceed to the throne. He finds life ex- tremely dull and uninteresting. The Prince's cousin wishes to cause his 1922 Conway Tearle, at The New Martin Theatre, Thursday and Saturday (only) downfall and seeks to gain his end by bringing a young dancing girl to the Prince's apartment. She is dis- guised as a boy but does not fool the Prince for long. They reverse the tables, however, and pretend that she is his mistress, when in reality a fine platonic affection has sprung up. In fact, it goes further. The Prince is wildly in love with this so- different little girl who has taught him to love humanity and to under- stand the real need of his people. When the young Prince is made the ruler of the kingdom, the Uncle wants him to marry the unknown Princess. The Prince refuses to lis- ten to this and will marry only Son- ya or nobody. She pleads with him to sacrifice their love for duty and the stubborn Uncle completely melts hefore her beauty and sincerity. sacrifice her beauty and sincerity. In the end, the couple are triumph- ant and love rules. Throughout, the play holds the interest with its de- lightful comedy and dramatic sus- pense. Its romantic appeal is sure to satisfy, and on the whole it is a most satisfying evening's enter tainment. Mr. Klaw has selected his cast with his usual care and the staging upholds the tradition for which his name in the theatrical world stands. "Sonya" is a romantic comedy of the highest type.
