With 'the score 5-0 at the end of the sixth in favor of the home team, Oshawa came to life and threw a real scare into Peeney Mills et al, when they slammed two counters across the plate and got another man to third In the ninth, the Motor men came back strong again and slipped an- other tally over the rubber but they lacked the punch to tie the game up and Oshawa dropped the first clash in the second half of the schedule. Belleville had the "Indian sign' on the Booth Boys from the start, send- ing a southpaw son of Hiawatha to the hill top to do the flinging for them, This dusky boy struck out no less than thirteen Oshawa batsmen in the nine innings and had the whole team trying to murder a teas- ing slow ball that he used quite fre- quently. During the first six in- nings of the game only two Oshawa men reached first base. Dobson was walked in the third- spasm while Palmer was hit by a pitched ball in the fifth frame. Neither of these players reached second. In the nine stanzas during which he twirled the Indian saw only 31 Oshawa batsmen come to the plate, Oshawa was able to nick him for only three safeties and while he saw his teammates com- mit two indiscretions he was never put into a tight position through poor support, Gallagher had to twirl eight frames and was faced by thirty-five batsmen in that time. Belleville pick- ed out ten of his shoots to convert into hits, Hagerman taking a fancy to two of them in particular and lean- ing on them both for home run drives. In the first innings two three baggers were knocked out by the Grand Trunk men, both of which blossomed forth into runs in that frame. Ray Belding was covering first again in the absence of "Buck" Wilson and accepted his eight chances in perfect styie. Pellow re- placed Dobson in left field in the sixth and nailed the only fly that went his way. Oshawa has dropped her first match in the second half of the sched- ule, and although she has made an inauspicious start is resolved to hum- ble the Butler boys here on Saturday. Lindsay has made a good stab at the league honors in the first half and has her eye on the pennant for this year and will not be easily turned aside. Allen who pitched the no hit game against Belleville some time ago is expected to do the flinging for the visitors and since Gallagher has not yet been defeated on his own lot there will be plenty of excitement on Saturday afternoon. British Imperials Saturday's Attraction Immediately following the C. O. B. A. baseball game between' Lindsay and Oshawa on Saturday afternoon at Alexandra Park, Oshawa Soccer team will hook up with the British Imperials from Toronto in a T. & D. fixture. Oshawa played this team to a one goal ile game in the Queen City and now she has them in her own home town, expects to win hand- fly. The game is called for 4.15 and with Perkins handling the game the crowd may expect a snappy battle all the way. Soccer is gaining a high place in the hearts of all Oshawa sporting fans and a large crowd is assured for Saturday. ---------- Race Points for Flying Club Are . When it comes down to handing out real "dirt" to a beaten foe The Examiner is making an unrivalled bid for first class honors. At the same time it would also be interest- ing to know how fit is that the sport- ing editor of The Examiner stated in Cobourg on Saturday afternoon that Dugan got to first base in the second on an error -by Rowden, Oshawa's short stop, and when The Examiner comes out on Monday he gives Dugan a hit. The Port Hope Guide does some good natured chaffing regarding the jet black band on Reeve George . Morris' hat after the game on Sat- urday, When some Oshawa support- ers were motoring through Port Hope on Saturday they noticed a gentleman on the main street with a hat band of red and a tie to match. If Oshawa were as low down in the league standing as Port Hope she would feel a little "bolsheviki" too. Permission has been granted the T.A.B.A. to the York to play the Belleville by Nationals team of the C.0.B.A. at Belleville on August 2. At Belleville yesterday the players stated that this application was in before the second schedule of the C. 0.B.A, was drawn up. On August 32nd Belleville will be playing in Lind- say. However, the game with the Toronto team will be staged at a later date. . Heckman Has Hung Up Record Won Twelve Games Out of Fif- teen Starts--Allowed Nine Earned Runs The Peterboro Examiner in its last issue indulges: in some justifiable boasting regarding the Peterboro ball team's pitching ace, Al Heckman. Here is the way Fred Craig sums up Heckman's work this summer: "The official figures in regard to Al. Heckman's work leave no doubt as to his being the premier pitcher in the Central Ontario circuit. "The Petes' twirler not only won 12 games in fifteen starts, but he made the remarkable record of al- lowing but nine earned runs in fif- teen games, and as he pitched ulto- gether 128 innings his earned run average was the record one of only one earned run every 1414 innings Of all variety of counters unearned or otherwise only thirty were register- ed against Heckman, an average of two runs a game. ""He held the opposition to a total of 77 hits, an average of a little more than five hits per game. The largest number of safeties registered against him in one game was seven, and the Belleville team were the only crew to get that number, getting seven in each of the two games played. Heck- man pitched two shut-out games, one against Lindsay and the other against Port Hope, held Oshawa to one run in two different games, and allowed Bowmanville and Leaside but one run each. Only in two games of the fifteen were more than three runs scored against him, Oshawa get- ting five and Belleville four, "By teams the runs scored against Heckman were as follows: Oshawa, three 'games .. Lindsay, two games .... Cobourg, two games .... . Belleville, two games ___ Leaside, two games .... Port Hope, two games . Bowmanville, two games irmsamone "The Petes' ace demonstrated his steadiness and control by allowing only fifteen bases, an average of one per game and hitting only two bats- men, one every 7% games. At the same time he fanned 160 men, giv- ing him an average of 10 3-5 strike- outs per game. Thirteen different innings he has retired the side by the strike-out route. "Out of the 128 innings he pitched. he blanked the opposition in 106 frames. Only once were three runs scored on him in an innings. Belle ville doing the trick in the ninth in- nings of the game here, and no team has scored more than three. Only six innings of the 128 saw two runs scored, Oshawa and Cobourg twice and Belleville and Lindsay once per- forming the feature. His record in this respect follows: Total innigs pitched Scoreless innings ... _ One run innings Two run innings .... . Three run innings . ... .... . . } "If there is another pitcher in the League whose record can match these figures, the Examiner would like to hear from him or his friends." wr] 28 - 106 LINDSAY 7, PORT HOPE 2.
