OSHAWA, ONTARIO, SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 1922 Ball Players ad Workout Thursday Night Quite a number of ball players were out at the Park again Thursday night for another workout and a batting practise was the order of the evening, Patton and Gallagher pitched to the batters with Silliphant receiving, Walt Fair seemed bent on losing the ball as he hammered the sphere away out 'to the track every time he connected, It would not be surprising to see Walt cop that Borsalino hat, which is being offered) by \C.M. Anderson to the "Babe" Ruth of the Central league. The new diamond In front of the grandstand is being whipped into shape this week, The base line has been skinned and rolled but the ground is still a little soft, It should be In first class shape in another week, The Central team will play a practise game with the Cedar Dale Town League nine on Saturday after- noon of next week at Aldxandra Park. This should provide a fine workout for the big leaguers and it will certainly help the Dale aggre- gation. Manager Petley of the South End team has a line of three pitchers and he is anxious to see them work. Manager Booth will have several opportunities to look over his stars this coming week and select a team for next Saturday's fixture. PT. Notices will be posted warning spectators that the use of other than parliamentary language will result in expulsion and that the inciting of players to violence will be treated in a like manner. The fan with the habitual vile tongue must go. If notices and persuasive me- thods fail to stamp out his kind re- course will be had to police inter- vention, as the council are satisfied that prosecutions will have a bene- ficial effect. Habitual offenders and others should be told now rather than later that the individual who rubs shoulders with him at a game may be a representative of the law with a mission to fulfil, Already there have been several complaints in Toronto this season ag to the language by spectators, and one busi- ness concern on Saturday threaten ed to close its ground if there is A ropetition. The T. & D. warning must be accepted seriously, other- wise somebody will receive a rude awakening. GALLAGHER HAS PT. HOPE GUESSING Port Hope is beginning about Oshawa's popular twirler, "Teddy" Gallagher, as the following comment in The Guide would indicate: "According to press reports it is going to be a case of let-her-go-Gal- lagher in the Central League this year. A lot of this advance infor- mation, however, should be taken with a grain of salt. Since the Cen- tral League has been in existence we have seen just as good pitchers as Gallagher waved into the bench. Take Cannon Ball Scott, of Lind- { say, Goyer, of Belleville, Dainty of | Oshawa and many others all ham- | mered to the four corners of the lot { during the season. And it is pretty | safe to say that Mr. Gallagher will | have a similar experience before he | makes the circuit of the Central | League." Auto Thieves Are Active everywhere. Belle- ville Grand Trunks are away to a start, They held their first practise Tuesday evening when some good material was uncovered. The In- telligencer comments on the situa- tion as follows: "There were two pitchers and two catchers warming up. Jack Wil- ljams, the Veronna Indian, and Vern Ferris, Boy's Secretary at the Y. M. C. A. were displaying tlieir wares. Of course it would not be proper to pass judgment on their pitching as yet, but they have certainly handled a baseball considerably in their days, it is quite evident. Williams is a southpaw and Ferris a right hand- er, "Those persons of the poetic im- agination, who dwell in other towns on the C. O, B. L. circuit, and who bave prophesied that *Pecney" Mills, baving graduated into the Benedict classitieation, would turn in his un- iform this season; should bave seen that well known receiver, handling them last night. He's just as good as ever. 'Soup' Goyer, another husky back stop, also worked out last night. 'Soup' is well known as 4 defence man on the Belleville In- termediate hockey team and is a brother of Fred Goyer, Belleville's former southpaw hurler. Pine street school grounds were crowded with spectators who watched with interest, the opening practise. A- mong the regulars of other seasons present were-- "Peeney"' Mills, "Soup" Goyer, F. Ross at first, Lem Crooks at 2nd: Al Meagher at 3rd; Vern Weir at shortstop: W. Ross, "Cap" Smith, Sammy Symons, and "Babe" Casey in the outfield. "Crooks is a mew man here hav- ing come to Belleville from Toronte about a month and a half ago. be- ing on the staff of the Bank of Com- merce here. Crooks played at sec- ond base last night and made a good saowing." FORMER OSHAWA PLAYER PRESIDENT 'Billy Gifford, who was a member of last year's Oshawa Central base- | ball team, but who is now in St Thomas, has been elected president of the Woodstock, St. Thomas, Galt. London League. Bill has no inten tion of discarding the diamond for the big chair in the new 0.B.AA SPORT COMMENTS The Cedar Dale Town Basdball League team is receiving grand sup- port from the residents of the Police Village and the club is now in a strong financial position. Several large donations have been received and the members of the club appre- ciate the support being given them.
