PICTON MAN, OWNER OF MANY FINE CURIOS Picton, Nov. 10. -- One of the finest collections of anicent coins, curios and relics of various sorts to .be found in this part of the country is in the possession of Mr. J. 8, Earle of Picton, who in many years has acquired a most inter- elting array of articlés of various kinds, Mr, Earl's interest in col- lécting relics dates back to 1868 when he first started the practice which he has followed out at ev- ery opportunity ever since. The re- sult is that today he has a marvel- lous collection of articles which have proved of great interest to the many people who have seen them, - Mr. Earle has one room in his home entirely devotedws to his collections and one inspecting them might well be interested for several hours during which time something unique in character would be presented at every turn. While every object in the room is of great interest and quite cosmo- politan in effect, being composed of Indian, Spanish, English and other curios, there are many out- standing articles, rare in the ex- treme, which Mr. Earle has in his possession. IST Belleville, Nov. 10.--Miss Vali- ere Wrightmeyer, 25 year old Bele ville contralto singer, has been chosen soloist in the Boston Grand Opera Company, and soon will make her debut as "Nancy" in the opera "Martha under the eminent con- ductor, Leginska. The announcement of Miss Wrightmeyer"s success is of parti- cular interest in this city where her rapid rise to success has been ®osely watched. Miss Wrightmey- er is a Belleville girl who recelv- ed her elementary and colleg:a. training in local schools, ol an early age she showed an aptitude for music, and commenec- ed to study with Mrs. A, E. Maec- Coll, who saw possibilities in her young pupil, Following her elementary stud- ies, Miss Wrightmeyer, about six years ago, became a pupils of 8, M. Anglin, local singing teacher, and progress continued. She took the degree of A.T.C.M. with firsis class honors, gaining the highest marks in the Dominion, and also the gold medal. Two years ago she went to Bos- ton, there to prepare with Vincent Hubbard as teacher, for an operatic career, Since going to Boston, Miss Wrightmeyer has been contralto soloist in the Broadway Winter Hill Congregational Church, She has also sung in two recitals in Belle- ville within the last year, on one occasion with Mr. James M. Booth, a Belleville boy now fn Boston, and last September with Empson McCormick, another Belleville boy and promising pianist, DIE IN MINE Belgrade, Jugo-Slavia, Nov, 10, --An explosion in a coal mine at Kakani, Bosnia, took the lives of an undetermined number of miners recently, Twelve men, seriously in- jured, were taken from the mine, investors. Tenders came in last August but so far they have not been acted on al- though there has been discussion. Several proposals come from British firms and one from the Canadian Vickers Company. The lowest bids aref rom overseas, but there are representations that, as Canadian money is involved, Cana- dian industry might reasonably. be employed on one of the ships even it it should cost more. Beyond stating that no contract has yet been awarded, Hon. J. L. Ralston, the departmental mrinister would make no comment. In the plans there are several alternative designs. As Parliament has voted the money, any hesitancy evidently is not due to anticipated objection in that quarter so much as to the de- mand that, in regard to at least one of these ships, and other Gov- ernment boats such as ice breakers or Canadian National steamships, Canadian shipyards should be pa- tronized when their prices are rea- sonable. Undoubtedly these works can be done more cheaply abroad, but the large question is whether to pay less and send some Cana dian millions out of the country or pay more and keep it here for th sustenance of Canadian industry and the employment of Canadian abor, 10 FORM LARGE AIR TERRITORIAL FORCE Britain to Provide for New Squadrons in 1929 Estimates London, Nov. 10.--Development of British auxiliary air forces and the formation of a kind of territor- fal air army are provided for in next year's air estimates, the ob- ject being to add five new squad- rons to Britain's aerial defences. The extra cost will be §5,000,- 000, but the move is dictated by the fact that German civilian flying has undergone the most rapid de- velopment in recent years, while France not only possesses the world's. largest air force but is preparing an immense program of commercial aviation, Already in existence in Britain are auxiliary air-squadrons for training civilians in city and coun- try, Among the larger cities so equipped are London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, These places recently made such an excellent showing in aerial manoeuvres for London's defence against night raids that it has now been decided to extend the volunteer service to other centres, It is considered that the idea might very well be extended to the Dominions, similar to, the auxi- Hary volunteer marine force which composed of Capadian yachtsmen, rendered such good service in pa- trol work during the early days of the war. Such volunteer squadrons are re- garded as most valuable 'for the development of an air-sense in communities and also for the -ad- vancement of civil aviation indi- rectly, OTTAWA PREPARES FOR GELEBRATION ARMISTICE DAY Distinguished Men Will Take Part in the Shadow of the Peace Tower Ottawa, Nov, 10.--~The nation's ob- servance of Armistice Day on Sun- day will be centred at Ottawa, where, in the presence of men distinguished in both international and national af- fairs, a ceremony of remembrance will be held, Outstanding among those who, in addition to notables in Canadian public life, will attend are Sir Austen Chamberlain, British Sec- retary of State for Foreign Affairs; Sir Esme Howard, British Ambas- sador to the United States, and Sir William Clark, High Commissioner of Great Britain to Canada. Mr. Tomii, Japanese Charge d'Af- fairs, representatives of the church, the judiciary, the consular corps and of all departments of national life, will assemble on Parliament Hill where, under the auspices of the Can- adian Legion, the tenth anniversary of the Armistice will be observed, A temporary cenotaph has been er- ected on the bill and it is around this the ceremonies will take place, units of the Oftawa garrison, together with ex-soldiers' organizations will parade.
