OShAWA GANANOQUE Summer He Great Accomplishment The people of the City of Osh- awa at last have the opportunity offered them of seeing something the like of which they have never seen before in Oshawa. This is in the form of a sheet of ice, 17.000 square feet in surface area, manu- factured by artificial means at Oshawa's Community Skating and | Curling Rink situated at Bond St. | east of Division. This opportun- | ity 1s offered for the first time to- morrow evening, the occasion of he Grand Opening of the Skating nd Curling Rink where an out- 'anding crowd is anticipated. The skating facilities which are ffered will, of course attract the largest number of people, but there will doubtless be a few present in- terested in this great accomplish- ment of modern science, the manu- { facturing of artificial ice and in the perfect manner in which it is | done. Pleasant Skate Only one other concern in this alty at present even possesses an aquipment for making ice on a large scale, this being ice for com- mercial and domestic purposes, with the result that the equipment at the Oshawa Community Skating and Curling Rink, will be the subject for much admiration and wonderment when the weneral public are permitted to in- spect the premises as well as to enjoy a pleasant skate, if they so desire, tomorrow night. Any Season Pastime The inception of an artificial ice plant for skating and curling pur- poses, even if not for hockey, is an event which has heen long looked forward to by the people of this city. The realization of this hope- ful expectancy is due to the efforts of a group of men in this city who handed themselves together as the Oshawa Curling Club some years ago, and thanks now tn their fi- nancial backing, their efforts have at any time In the year from No- vember until April, rererdless of the eondition of the elements. And needless to state, this arti- ficial plant also provides an ice sur- face for curling, such as is avall- able at present in only a few cities in this Province. Despite the Weather The artificial ice for the lers will now make their games events which can be ahso- lutely" relied upon and not depend- int upon the favourahle asrect of the weather. Formerly it reauir- ed an outside temperature of at least less than 30 degrees above zero in order to assure any sort of a game, but now the temperature can rise outside to even as hich as 55 or 60 degrees without it affect- ing the ice surface in the least. J Miles of Piping No less than eight and three- quarter miles of 1% Inch piping have heen lald as the hase for the manufacture of ice in this new nlant. Imagine a line of iron pines and on end, stretching from Osh: awa nearly to Bowmanville and a fair conception Is reached of the great amount of piping and para- nhernalia required to equip a plant of this kind. The large amount of ammonia gas which is also required would prove doubtless another source of surprise to many people Wonder of Science' The principle of which this arti: ficial ice manufacturing plant works, like all artificial ice plants, fs that ammonia expands an in- credulous amount when changing from the liquid to the gaseous state. A compressing machine, ex- erting sufcient pressure to freeze 50 tons of fce in 24 hours, Is used to transform gaseous ammonia to the liguid, and In doing so, all heat of any kind is taken from the liquid ammonja when it passes out eurs of the compressor. The liquid amr monia passes from the compressor into the huge network of pipes on the floor of the skating rink, the pines being either surrounded with water or soft "slushy" fce. The liquid ammonia has a tendency to expand more than 20 times its nor- mal capacity in becoming 2 gar, but to do so it has to take all the beat it ean from {ts surroundine objects which in this case happens to be the soft ice and water. VICE-PRESIDENT OSHAWA CURLERS LTD. W. A. COAD heat is again taken out of it and it is transformed back to a liquid. In this manner one supply of am- monia, providing there are no leaks in the equipment, will last and can be used indefinitely. 23 CONVICTED OF MURDER THIS YEAR Ottawa, Nov. 8.--With not all the murder trials concluded yet, 23 people have been convicted of murder and sentenced to be hanged so far this year. Six have heen executed.
