ANCIENT HISTORY Rugby didn't sprout over night. As a mat- ter of fact the game is about as old as Adam, |. but our more reliable references just go back | | as far the days of the Greeks and Romans, and | | tell us that these gentlemen for a certainty had games which corresponded closely to our pre- sent day rugby. It was the Romans, we are i * further told, who brought the game to Eng- sand, the supposed birthplace of the game, when a large num- ber of them moved north about 83 B.C. and settled down to| li thoroughly enjoy themselves until the fruit business ran out} about 400 A.D, rou > Anyway, that's our story on how the game got into Eng- land, and we intend to stick to it. As for the game itself, it was probably invented by a couple dozen of our alleged an- | cestors, according to Darwin, who decided to have a scrap one Saturday afternoon over a particularly ripe cocoanut, it being at one of those times in the decade when the cost of living was rather high, and so the cocoanut was rather worth battling for. The affair being such a diversion from battling with their wives, our friends probably found themselves enjoying the scramble, and thereupon made it a regular Saturday afternoon affair as long as the cocoanuts held out. However, like contagion, the game in a de- cidedly crude form got to England, and we owe our homage today to the land of cutlery for this contribution to the autumnal health of the generation, It was not until the middle of the last century, however, that any real steps were: made, so we shall save the steps for tomorrow and make a good sized staircase out of them. DR. D. R, CAMERON Who was last night unanimously ..re-elected as President of the Oshawa Intermediate = Hockey Cub. NEW IDEA FOR TRACK TO MAKE FAR KEENER SPORT Sydney, N.S., Oct, 2.--The barks and yaps of greyhounds when in kennels waiting to take their turn to go to the track ure not to be wasted at future meeings with live hares at Mascot. Should the pro- posed scheme prove successful, the barks of the dogs in the kennels will be used to speed the bare home. A microphone is to be placed in the kennels to transpds the barks of the dogs to the track. 'Three or four loud speakers will be plae- ed around the track, and as the bare passes various points the loud speakers will be switched on. By this means it is ho that the hare. hearing the bark of the dogs will go all the faster to cover, At present he is chased home by 2 man on horseback from the centre of the track, and also help- ed on his way by a screeching sir- en. WATER POWERS AT STAKE IN LEGAL CASE Ottawa, Oct. 1.--The Supreme Court of Canada will be the venue tomorrow of a legal tussle fraught with vital consequences to the people of Ontario and Quebec and indeed to all the Proyices of Can- ada. At 10.30 in the morning mear- ly 8 score of leading counsel in the Dominion will unlimber and go into action, with the richest water powers of the country depending upon the outcome. - The lear Judges of Supreme Court ere to decide the relative rights of the Dominion and the Provinces, re- spectively, in relation to the pro- prietary interest in, and executive control over, waters with respect to mavigation and water powers created or made available by or in connection with works for the improvemet of; navigation. The reference to the highest tribunal in Canadas is submitted in response to the demands of On- tario and Quebec for a "show- down," and arises from the increas- ing importance of the undevelopea water powers on the St. Lawrence, the Ottawa and other navigable rivers, which are estimated to bel vantage points around the ground to replace those destroyed in the fire Saturday, and under these rays the team went through a smart workout in which it was apparent that the players had realized the mistakes made in the exhibition with Westward Saturday afternoon and were prepared to rectify them, Chiefly noticeable was the greater speed put into the starting of plays. The appearance of Coach Clarry Foran in a player's role added a spicy note to tonight's bill. The lure has been too much for the middle wing star, who after being out for a season, duriag which time he acted as pilot of the club, again has donned the pads and taken up his position on the line, where he has shone as one of the greatest ball-carriers in Canadian football. s------------------ LITTLE WORLD SERIES RESUMED TOMORROW Indianapolis, Oct. 1. -- Baseball was taboo here today for Indianap- olis and Rochester contenders for the little world series champlon- ship.
