SENATE VACANCIES CAUSE DISCUSSION Appointments Unlikely to Be Made Before Premier King Returns Ottawa, Sept. 30, -- Judicial and senatorial appointments in Quebec are giving the Government a subject of some discussion if not particular toncern. On the Bench of the Pro- vince there are three vacancies--two in the Superior Court and one in that body of inferior jurisdiction, the Circuit Court, In the Senate there are two Que- bec vacancies. For these positions many, with or without claims, are pressing their suits, As the appointments may affect two or three members of Parliament and would involve the opening of seats, action may be deferred until the Prime Minister returns, The Government has never been strong for appointing members to positions necessitating by-elections but it is epresented that in any seat proposed 0 be opened, the risk of misfortune is not pronounced, MURDER SUSPECT SUICIDES IN CELL Fredericton, N.B.,, Sept. 30.-- DODD'S KIDNEY PILLS il A HE, = HOOVER REFUTES USE OF CREED CRY Republicans Admit the Ef: fectiveness of Speeches by Governor Smith Washington, Sept, 30.--The core dial reception given Governor Smith ip the Middle West is tho most-talked-of political aeverop- ment today. For instance, Herbert Chase, an automotive authority, writes in the current number of the Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers that "Concerning the future of front- wheel drives, there is good ground for the view that the advantages they present outweigh the disad- vantages, but it does not follow as a necessary corollary that front-driven cars will become the popular type or even that they will he adopted soon by many manufacturers." Construction Not New "It Is known, however," Mr. Chase continues, "that at least three or four companies, including one or two prominent makers, are greatly interested in this type of drive and either have experimental cars well in automotive omer! The fact that such drives appear to add materially to the safety of driv- ing, especially at high speed and un- der conditions where skidding is likely to ccur with rear-drive ears, is a consideration of primary impor. tance." Mr, Chase points out that this form of construction is not mew, as the first front-wheel drive is report- ed to have been used in a self-pro- pelled vehicle as long ago as 1862, and it was applied to gasoline-driven vehicles at least as early as 1900, [------ {7 Im------ Telephone Grover 7247 At Our Expense STANDARD BRICK Co., Limited Manufacturers of GOOD RED STOCK BRICK 500 Greenwood Ave, Toronto, Ont.
