THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 192A PAGE NINE What's What and Who's Who in the Amusement World 0 of Filmdoms Great Pictures Playing at Local Theatres "A Certain Young Man"? Bound to Provide Much Humor at Regent -- "The Passionate Adventure" at New Martin One of Film. dom's Much Talked-about Screen Successes. You have seen many throbbing vomances on the screen, drama in all its aspects, most every kind of emotion and type of character, but It 48 a long time since you've seen a sophisticated drama so entertain- Ingly unfolded as "A Certain Young Man," which will be shown at the eginning Mon. Regent Theatre, beginning on Mon- day. It is not so much the theme as its treatment. Each character brings to his or her part poise, gophistication, innocence or a worldly-wise assurance that adds fresh zest, new flavor to each little incident and scene. It's not only because Ramon Novarro is the star- ring player, but, more important, he plays a role entirely unlike any- thing he has had before. In this pleturization he is a charming, gal- land [nobleman by birth--a "ladies' man' by circumstances -- seeking experience among women, but play- ing safe by confining his efforts to the married ones. There is no eter- nal triangle, no strong loves or tierce hates. His so-called "affairs and "conquests" are handled with a delightful delicacy and captivat- ing subtlety. Fox news and a supreme comedy "My Mistake" complete an excel- lent bill. Passionate Adventure The "strong, silent man" has al- ways proved of extraordinary fas- cination to women---and even com- manded the respect of men -- whether he has been hero of fact or fiction, but nobody seems to have considered the claim of the "strong, silent woman." This fact emerges from discovering the pecu= liar attractiveness of Alice Joyce in Graham Cutts' production of "The Passionate Adventure." which is playing at the New Martin Theatre on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. With her impassive features, deliberate deportment and temperamental restraint, the attraction of Miss Joyce is practic- ally unique among film actresses, Her attraction is, in fact, anal- ogous to that of the strong, silent WaVaTaVaVaYaVaYaVaY: New Martin === THEATRE==== -Does Your Husband Play Golf? --What Are The Duties of A Wife--See The Passionate dventure with ALICE JOYCE Marjorie Daw and Clive Brook No Passionate Adventure for Husbands Added Attractions "My Mistake" A Side Splitting Fun Maker. 'The Passionate Adven- ture" is truly modern, dealing in part with the after effects of the Great War. It is clear now that the war ef- fected a complete evolution in the relationship of the sexes. In the national emergency, women shoul- dered the burden of commercial responsibility and independence was a8 natural development. Men, too, unceremoniously snatched from social and domestic ties and thrust into animal life of mud and A A TG HTH rT ILL Hii HII TTI | | blood in Flanders, inevitably be- |; impulse and passion. But a less apparent result im many cases was a greater realiza- tion of dependence; wives learned to appreciate their husbands and menfolk found that affection meant something more, than pretty words That is the theme of Mr. Frank Stayton's novel, "The Passionate Adventure," now produced as a film by Graham Cutts (producer of "Woman to Woman"). The war upsets a union of detached har- mony, the p ful married life of Adrian and Drusil- la St. Clair--but the upset ailti- mately has the advantage of bring- ing them closer together and teaching them the true meaning of Alice Joyce and Clive VINE NEW SEATS ARE INSTALLED IN LOCAL THEATRES The increased patronage at local theatres has im- pressed the managers of these amusement houses to such a great extent that they have gone away out of their way in providing addi- tional comfort for their pat- rons for the coming enter- tainment season, In both the New Martin and the Regent Theatres, a large number of the old seats in use for a considerable length of time have been replaced by new cushioned opera seats, Sitting in these makes one think he is at home in an easy chair, This act on the part of the man- agement of the local the- atres is much appreciated by those who make it a practise, and a good one, of attending the theatre once at least for every change of attraction, Ramon Navarro in 'A Certain Young Man" What {s Ramon Novarro like? To the public, he is one of the most popular stars of the day, but to Hollywood he is still a mystery, This in spite of the fact that Rae mon has been a citizen of the film colony for several years, Novarro, who plays the whimsi- cal young London lord in "A Cer- tain Young Man,' his new Metros Goldwyn-klayer vehicle coming Monday to the Regent Theatre, is equally at home in lightsome vein or a romantic role like "Ben-Hur." Personally he is boyish, with an enthusiasm tempered by a naive cynicism, Disillusionment has not made him a gkeptic--only cautious, He has many friends, but few that know him away from his work, He seldom attends film folks' gather- ings, LJ "Will you leave for immediately after Eleanor?" "No, Jenny, we'll breakfast at the then drive abck & NS, ST EAT: your honeymoon the ceremony, Miss have our wedding Capital Cafe, and | here for'my bags." His associates wonder what. he does with his spare time, and seem almost incredulous when told the truth, When he is not studying a new role, he is taking a course in elocution of studying singing une der Louis Gravure, He is a brils lfant pianist, and for pastime he has a little marionette theatre in his home, where he stages his own plays, M8 (J) and wife.
