The police bowlers were made to feel at home in Whitby and during the interesting program, given in the . Royal Hotel as the concluding event of the day, expressed their appreciation for the cordial treat- ment they had been accorded. The two visiting rinks played a game each hoth in the afternoon and later at night, while four local rinks took part. Dyring the after- noon P .C. Giles' rink, consisting of P, C. Colwell, P. C. Grey, P. C. Mills was defeated 20-12 by a rink skipped by Wm. Cook and includ- ing M. J. Hicks, Geo. Anderson and John Hays. To even matters, how- ever, Sergt. Hobson's rink with T. Forbes, G. Brown and B. Fisher outclassed W., J. H. Richardson's local rink, with Chief Gunsom, H. Lucas and Wm. Ellis, 25-15, The tables were completely re- versed at night, P. C. Gile's rink emerging victorious 16-12 over a local rink skipped by Norman Thomas with Wm. Correll, Herbert Pringle and J. M .Hicks. Serst. Hobson's rink was not so fortunate loisng 13-8 to - Wm. Cook's rink with Chief Gunson, W. J. H. Rich- ardson and OC. Barton. At 6.30 o'clock the visitors with their hosts were entertained to a tasty supper at the Royal Hotel and were welcomed to town by Mr. R. A. Hutchinson, president of the Chamber of Commerce. During the afternoon the ladies in the party were conducted on a motor tour through the town under the direc- tion of Mr. Wm. Ayres and were shown the many points of interest including the Ontario Ladies' Col- lege, the Ontario Hospital, the har- bor. and county buildings. The tour was concluded in time to join the others at supper. Bowling was again resumed at the local greens until 9.30 o'clock, when all repaired to the Royal Hotel where light refreshments were served, following which a splendid program of comic songs, vocal and instrumental solos, and recitations was givem. ESTEEMED WHITBY RESIDENT DIES Thomas Gill Deverell Had Been ll for Several Months oe -------- (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, Sept. 20--The death oc¢- curred early. Tuesday morning of Thomas Gill Deverell, in his 68th year, following an illness of several months. The decascd has been practically an invalid since this spring but although his death was not un- expected, his passing will be regret- ted by many. The late Mr. Deverell was the des- fonda of one of the pioneer famil- ies of this district, being born in Whigby, the son of the late Thomas Deverell. He followed in the foot- steps of his father as a builder and contractor and many of the town's business blocks and fine homes were built by either father or son. The deceased has been a member of the local housing commission since its inception and was associated with Composite Lodge, AF. & AM. Al- though Anglican in faith, since his marriage, he had attended the Bap- tist Church. A man of good charac- ter ,he was a highly respected citizen and loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss 'Bessie, at home, and two sons, Ernest, Toronto and Rob- ert, Whitby, two brothers, W. P. Deverell, of Omaha, Neb, and A. Best, pastor of the Whitby Baptist church, will be in charge. -- SETTLERY' FINANGE SCHEME LAUNCHED Complete Organization at a Meeting of Mortgage Association Regina, Sept. 19--The organization has been completed-of the Coloni- zation Finance Corporation of Can- ada at the annual meeting of the Dominion Mortgage and Investments Association, CC, M, Bowman, land settlement chairman, announced. The letters patent have been issued by the Secretary of State and as a suffi- cient number .of member companics of the Dominion Mortgage Associa- tion have already indicated their in- tention to become identified with the Coloniaztion Finance Corporation of Canada, the organization meeting wil be held at the head office, Tor- onto, in the near future, when the officers of the corporation will be selected. In addition to lands owned by loaning companies this corpora- toin will assist in the colonizing of excess holdings in Western Canada. Basis of Land Value The corporation has proceeded on the basis that the value of the land is not any sentimental attachment the owner may have for it, nor is it al- ways the claim of the loaning com- pany against it, but it is based on the productivity over fifteen years after allowing for a reasonable standard of living. In order that funds required for the administration of the Colonization Finance Corporation may be assured during the early years of operation, the Canadian Pacific Railway Com- pany has agreed to advance up to £85,000 per anpum for a period of five years. A contract will he entered into between the Colonization Fin- ance Corporation and the Canada Colonization Association by which the Canada Colonization Association agrees to colonize and supply the after care over a period of years for families colonized without expense to the Colonization Corporation and the corporation agrees to furnish the land, and equipment plus the super- vision and farm management, until the new settlers are safely establish cd on the land.
