Empire entrans have been slipping quietly into Toronto within the past few weeks and settling down to hard training. Most of those from the British Isles have joined the lists within the past few days. Now they form a formidable squad, without taking into account the native Cana- dian contingent which numbers near- ly 50 and before the list closes will include a score of dangerous con- tenders. First of the Britishers to arrive on the scene was Edgar Finlay, of Syd- ney, New South Wales, holder of many titles, A second Australian, Tommy Adrian, of Manley, is chiefly known as the coach who discovered and trained Andrew "Boy" Charlton, Australia's won er-swimmer. Rum- ors that Charlton himself might en- ter the marathon were started when it was learned that Adrian was in Amsterdam with his protege for the Olympic games and will race in Can- ada on his way back to Australia with Charlton, An entry from Millie Hudson, a- mong the most brilliant of Britain's feminine stars, and a veteran mara- thoner, came next and then the bulky Herr von Papenfuss, of South Africa arrived in persons." Von Papenfuss pounded along for r:.ore than 14 hours last year but lacked speed. Last win- ter, however, he t-.ined in California and changed his stroke to a six-beat crawl which furnishes more speed with less effort. Then Norman Leslie Dercham, of Britain, bobbed up suddenly in To- ronto, Dercham holds the British Empire record for swimming the English channel, having crossed in 13 hours, 55 minutes to lower Gert- rude Ederle's time. George Close and David Billington are other entrants irom Britain who promise to be real contenders, There are more than a dozen additional Empire entries from scattered sec- tions of the globe, including tw from the West Indies.
