Chiang Kai Shek, youthful and modern war-lord, announced plans to bring China's ntvy up to date as rap- idly as possible. Chiang's program, as indicated, in- volves an extensive schedule of con- struction which would put the new China in a class with the greatest world powers. The revelation of such plans by one of the Big Four of China, established definitely that the nation, so lopg torn by civil war, was at last ready to start on the road to permanent unity, Such a naval program also was in- terpreted as meaning that China would make a strong bid for recogni- tion at once by all world powers. "The future of China depends upon raising her to a first-class power," Chiang said, indicating that the naval plans probably would be one of the first steps in that direction. BIG BLUEBERRY + YIELD EXPECTED Provincial Agricultural De- partment Official in Saguenay Area Quebec, Aug. 20--A much larger yield of blueberries for the Province of Quebec is the prospect held out by the Department of Agriculture, al- though no statistics have as yet been gathered. One -of the officers of the depart- ment left for the Saguenay district in the beginning of the week to sup- ervise the loading of no less than 18 freight cars of berries to be sent to one of the great canneries in that ye- gion. The Government grants sub- sidies to the blueberry canning in- dustry, and it is because of this fact that one of its agents visited the Saguenay and attended to the loading of the berries, who has to be able to [later report to the department upon the quality of the fruit used and the extent of the yield in that particular district, 5 BRITAIN'S DIFFICULTY 0. L. Garvin in London Observer) We have had everything against us as a people. Foreigh and Im- perial affairs together have involved us in more numerous distractions and uncertainties than any other people ever knew. As the most completely urbanised mation and the most de- pendent on world-trade we were bound to be more dislocated by war than any other belligerent. "Peace is the greatest of British interests," because war in itself whatever its causes or courses, is more deeply and lastingly injurious to our ultra-civic type of society than to any other, CRITICISM ANGERS ITALIAN AVIATOR Objects to Questions on When He Proposes to Fly Hartford, Conn, Aug. 20.--Cesare Sabelli's plane Roma, built for a trans-Atlantic flight, landed here on Friday afternoon after what is un- derstood is the last test flight which the ship will make before it is headed across the Atlantic for Rome. With Sabelli in the plane were Roger Q. Williams and Pietro Bonnelli, navi- gator. Sabelli displayed considerable anger when asked about reports appearing in the press of Rome that it was time that he stopped giving news- paper interviews and undertook his flight, "I have given no newspaper inter- views, and I shall fly when I am ready," said the Italian flier. "For a long time there has béen much cri- ticism in the local foreign press. Ap- parently the same thing is now ap- pearing abroad. I say now what I said before. I am making this flight, and am the one most interested. I will go when I am ready, and when 1 think it safe to go. , Not before." QUEBEC'S DAMAGE BY FOREST FIRES Total Area Affected About Nine Square Miles Quechee, Aug. 20.--From the time the snow melted in the forests of the province up to the present only 391 acres of merchantable timber has been damaged by forest fires, an offi- cial statement handed out by the for- est protection service states. In all the total area affected by forest fires this year is not more than nine square miles, of which two-thirds was land that had already been burnt or exploited. This state of things might he at- tributed by those unfamiliar with cli- mate conditions to the amount of rain that fell in certain regions dur ing the summer, the bulletin states, but information gathered by the pro- tection service Says certain sections were less favored by rain than others, and it was in these regions that the forest fires were most numerous, A number of slash fires yet remain but it is the fire lit by the tourist, fisherman, miner, prospector or ex- cursionist, either to eook his food or chase away the mosquitoes that is the most dangerous, All fires started within the confines of the forest con- stitute a grave menace, and this is the reason that all travellers, whe- ther they be hunters, tourists, vaca- tionists or scttlers should make it their duty not to leave the forest be- fore making sure that they have com- pletly extinguished the small fires, NORTH OSHAWA North Oshawa, Aug. 19. -- Miss Marguerite Bonnetta of Whitby is visiting her grandmother, Mrs, E Manning, Mr. G, Lageer attended the Lind- say and Bishop wedding last week, Mrs. A. We believe that such adver- tisers have remdered a great service to the community by forcing down excessive charges in connection with burials which were long a burden on the community, but about which a family which has suffered feels shame- iy in making complaint, DISCOVER ANTHRAX ON VIRGINIA FARMS Dairy Deliveries to Washe ington Have Been Orderv ed Suspended E.! Washington, Aug. 19.--Anthrasx, one of the oldest and most deadly, diseases, has been discovered om several Virginia Farms, and Dis. trict of Columbia health officals have revoked permits of seven Vir ginia dairy farms which have been delivering to the Capital. Persons affected by anthrax spores rarely recover, the realth department sald. Numerous cases broke out several years ago as a result of shaving brushes made from hair of infected cattle, The disease is contracted usually by handing hides or carcasses of infected animals. Action om hue man' beings as the result of drink- ing milk from anthrax-infeeted cattle has never been determimed, hut outbreaks are always follow- ed by a suspension of dairying ac» tivities, So far no persons have been reported as affected with the spores, Anthrax spores are said to live for years, unaffected by boiling water or sun rays, Carcasses of infected animals are always burn« ed. Where they have been buried, earth worms many years latér have brought spores to the surface and infected grazing cattle, The disease is known in all parts of the world, In 1916 several cases were dis covered in Great Britain, presume ably from shaving brushes importe ed from China, } Anniversary Special erie 10,00 COLL LLL COLL TLL TTT) Dominion Clothing Co. 68 King St, W, Phone 8141 We Deliver Felt Bros.
