THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES Greater Oshawa Edition -- SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1928 78 Arcade Known for Quality and do Service Foundations 'of Business Laid 39 Years Ago--Complete "Stocks of Wanted Goods -- Old In point of history, but \ sense of efficient trade-building ser- wice, and complete stocks of the most modern and quality-tc*ad lines, The Oshawa Arcade Ltd. under the capable administration of Manager A. E. Gurney, is this setting new high records both total sales and business volume. The Arcade is a household word throughout Oshawa and adjacent districts. Its policies, tested by 39 'years' of merchandising exper- fence, have withstood every test of economic conditions, both local, national and even world-wide since 1a founding in 1889 by Thomas iller and Sons. In May, 1927, the Miller inter- ests were purchased by R. Travers of Montreal and Kingston, who or- ganued The Oshawa Arcade Ltd. r. Gurney, whose executive and sales experience in dry goods mer- ehandisinz, had earned a high opinion of his abilities throughout the trade. He came to Oshawa from Sudbury, where he had been in charge of the branch of the Canadian Department Stores lo- cated in that city. Prior to that he was manager of the I. L. Mat- thews company, Port Arthur, one of the leading department stores at the head of the Great Lakes. {The 'Arcade, which occupies a strategic retail position on Sim- coe St. North, is stocked with dry goods and furnisn:ngs equal to that of any big city department store. Equipped with the most modern and attractive of store fixtures, and featuring display in wide windows at front, it is the sort of store that attracts the shopper instnctively. , That attraction 1s rewarded in the store by a staff of managers and clerks, many of whom have years of local experience, who make sBopping a pleasure Instead of an ordeal, ; The Arcade service is based on the modern conception of eustom- ev relations, which carries out sdles with utmost attention to the buyer's wishes. The result is a large sales volume and increasing pumer of permanent customers, 'In 1889 tne tate Thomas Miller, with his sons, George and Thomas Miller, young men of 25 and 22 years respectively, established their first small store, + Steady expansion marked the eompany's history. Setbacks to which most business concerns of even hall their age were never experienced by the Arcade. They never had a fire, even in the days when less permanent store com- struction and more primitive fire protection service were the rule. The store, always on the present site, was emlarged several times. Finally complete new premises were erected not long before the Messrs. Miller sold their holdings to The Oshawa Arcade Ltd, and { retired from active business. The Arcade today has a staff of 25 employees. Its delivery ser vice reqires the service of several trucks which operate in Oshawa, Whitby, and this city's environs. Oshawa Has Fine Brokerage Office A. L. Hudson Co. Victoria Apartments were built in 1927 and Oshawa looked on with wonder at the elaborate manner in which the work was carried out. In 1928 faith in a growing city again became apparent when under the same auspices Simcoe Manor was or will be completed and ready for tenants in the very near future.
