"WHITBY Representative--JAMES HOLDEN Phone, Howse 10--Office 434 | "Whitby Ends Claims on - Toronto Eastern Ry. For Mary St. Repairs Provisions Are That Railway Pay Cost of Paving Its Disused Crossing on Brock Street and Grant Town a Strip of Land on Its Right-of-Way, Permit. ting Extension of Mary Street to Garden Street (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, Aug. 8,--By motion of Reeve Albert W, Jackson, the town council at its regular meeting last night, decided to make no further claim upon the Toronto Eastern Railway for repairs on Mary street, provided the railway company would pay for the cots of paving its disused ' crossing on Brock street, and grant the corporation a strip of land on its right-of-way, which would give Mary street con- tinuation to Garden, This land had been previously purchased by the rallway at a cost of $4,000, and as the company, in addition to build- ing a bridge on Mary street, had placed some gravel on the thor oughfare, the council considered the above arrangement would be satisfactory and end the crossing nuisance. Reeve Jackson outlined the negotiations which had taken place in the matter, and clearly illustrated that the council would be well advised to accept the rail- road's proposal as mentioned. The report of Chief of Police Gunson for July was received and adopted, There were 69 cases prosecuted, with a total of $804 re. ceived in fines, constituting a rec- ord, Of this amount, $200 was for criminal code convictions, $320 for L, C. A, violations, and $284 for Highway Trafic Act offenses. Coun. Frank Threadgold, ehair- man of the streets committee, Pes ported that a contract for hauling and spreading gravel had been awarded to H: Hall, whose tender was 30 cents a cubic yard. He pointed out that the contract made it necessary for the gravel to be hauled to the stone crusher in suffi- cient quantities to keep the crush er working steady. The streets committee also recommended that A. E. Vanst be inted in- spector of sidewalks at 40 cents per working hour and that the con- tract for laying sidewalks he let to Messrs, Campbell and Moore. The report was adopted. Among the communications read by Acting Clerk H. Pringle was a notice of suit for damages amount- ing to $500 filed by N. W, Stafford, Kingston road, on behalf of his son, Ernest Stafford, who was al- legedly injured in an accident which occurred on May 14th when the motor pumper of the fire de- partment ran into a erowd of peo- ple while answering a call, The notice was referred to the town so- licitor, A, HE. Christian, On account of the holiday season three members were missing from the council hoard last night, name- ly, Councillors C, Broughton, David Mowat and Wm. Pringle. All oth- ers were present including Mayor John Bateman, Reeve Albert Jack- son, Deputy Reeve R, J. Under- wood, Councillors Jas, Ormiston, F. Threadgold and Ed. Bowman. Members of the brigade report that they had an enjoyable outing and were sur- prised at the number of Ameri- ean companies present, Fire Chief William Smith who has heen asociated with the Whit- by fire company for over half a century, received the prize for he- ing the oldest chief present. In spite of advanced years Chief Smith is still active and his wealth of experience in fighting conflagrations of many sorts un- der varied conditions is held by many as accountable for the low fire losses which the community has suffered within the last dee- ade, Chief Smith can well re- member the time when Whitby's business section was well protect- ed by a deep well sunk in the vi- cinity. There were no hydrants and the pressure was obtained through a steam fire engine such 8s that which now lies unused In the fire hall. In the residential districts these wells or reservoirs were quite scarce and the firemen had to rely upon the ordinary well with which every home was then equipped. It took little time to exhaust the supply of wa- ter and once a home caught fire the chances of saving it were few. Now, however, conditions have changed. Hydrants are placed at regular intervals throughout the town and the brigade has for its use g& powerful motor pumper to give extra water pressure, a speedy chemical truck and 2,600 feet of hose.
