CANAL Cut Through the Isthmus of Chignecto Would Make Province an lsland (By Canadian Press) Amherst, N.S, Aug. 8---Off and on for more than a century past engineers and commercial leaders in the Maritime Provinces have been preaching the necessity of cutting a canal through the narrow Isthmus of Chignecto and thus at a single stroke, severing Nova Beotia from the rest of the Deo- minion. It is pointed out that while such a canal would trans- form the province into an island in the terminology of physical geo- graphy, it would bring its produe- tion fields and ports into closer commercial communication with the markets of central and western Canada, The century-old project was re- cently revived by the Amherst Board of Trade, which, after re- ceiving an exhaustive report pre- sented by Hance J. Logan, K.C, passed a resolution urging the Do- minion Government to underfake the construction of the canal at the earliest possible date. A canal across the Isthmus would shorten the sea run from the port of the maritimes to the St, Lawrence river ports hy two days, cutting off the dangerous circuit of the Nova Scotia coast; would greatly facilitate trade hetween the Atlantic Provinces and the West Indies and bring Prince Edward Island into closer touch with St. John, the commercial capital of New Brunswick. While the Maritime Provinces, and particularly Prince Edward Island, stand to gain most hy the consummation of the project, its promoters state the whole Domin- lon would benefit, Millions of tons of coal from the Cumberland Ba- sin, gypsum from Albert County, N.B., apples from the Annapolis Valley, could he hipped through the new artery of trade to the Gulf of Bt. Lawrence and so to the port of Montreal for distribution throughout the Dominion. Trans- portation and marine insurance costs would drop. Fifty years ago the project seem- ed well on its way to actual con- summation when the Dominion Government granted $1,000,000 to commence construction, it having been approved by the Canal Com- nrission of 1871, together with the Welland, Lachine, Sault Ste, Marie and- Rideau canal plane. Then ea more novel scheme for removing the trade barrier blossomed into brief splendor, detracting atten- tion from canalisation, In 1882 the Ship Rallway projett was launched and quickly gained strong support, The idea was to consiruct a rallway on which ships with their cargoes undisturbed in their holds, would be hauled by locomo- tives across Chignecto. But after some preliminary work the project was abandoned, The first survey for a canal site was carried out in 1822 at the ine stigation of the British Govern- ment, more interested in finding a safe route for its small ships or war from Saint John and the Bay of Fundy to Quebec than in stimu- lating the commercial develop- ment of the infant provinces of the sea. Other surveys followed in 1825 and 1843. At the Quebec Conference of 1864, one of the gatherings which paved the way for the uplon or the provinces, the construction of the waterway, then referred to as the Bale Verte canal, was disvuse. ed. Present backers of the pro- Ject declare that it was held out to the people of the Maritimes as one of the inducements to enter the Confederation pact. The Canal Commission of 1871 declared the Baie Verte canal to be of the utmost importance, plac ing it on the same basis as the Wel land, Lachine and Sault Ste, Marie projects. These others have long since been carried to successful completion, but the 20 mile strip of bogland which joins Nova Sco- tia and New Brupswick still re- mains unseyvered, Along the line favored by the latest survey conditions are ideal for canal comstruction, almost the entire distance being through marsh and bogland, with only #bout two-thirds of a mile of ped sandstone requiring blasting, .
