(7-¢) DISCUSS REDUCTION MATERNAL MORTALITY (By Canadian Press) Toronto, June 10.--Reduction of maternal mortality, through the education of the public as to the importance of pre-natal care of mothers, was the object of a reso- lution discussed at the meeting of the Canadian Social Hygiene Coun- cil here recently. One of the muin- bers suggested that the term '"'ma- ternal mortality' be changed to "maternal welfare," and he stated that the public had a perfect right to make inquiry into the cause of every case of maternal mortalify. Representatives of the League of Nations and the Women's Labor League rose to speak of the work of their organizations with regard to this problem. Miss K. M. Lizars, the Canadian author who wrote "In the Days of the Canada Company" and "Hu- mors of '37," is at present in Eng- land. She writes to the "Mail and Empire" anent maternal mortality in London: "The Minister of Health, Mr. Neville Chamberlain has declared war on what he called one of the cruellist scourges of the race--the permanent injury and often the death of women in child-birth. One of the papers, in describing Mr, Chamberlain's speech on the sub- ject, before the House of Commons, spoke of him as 'taking as it were an oath of service, with the white face and restrained passion of a recruit in a noble cause" His usu- ally chill and. flat tones, they say throbbed with emotion, and tus Minister who reins his feelings hard, for once slackened the bit. The House, signifying its approval, remembered that his own mother died in childbirth. "In enumerating the lowering of the general death-rate from 14 to 12.3 a thousand, and the infant death-rate from 89 to 70 a thous- and, and referring to the strenu« ous campaign against cancer, rheumatism, ete., Mr. Chamberlain went on to speak of the one thing that had been .meglected. "One figure," he is quoted as saying, 'shows no improvement, though it concepns a vital subject--the fig- ure of maternal mortality. It seems to me a terrible thing that this rate has ,remaired unchanged for 20 years. "Following a general inquiry in- to the causes of maternal mortal. ity, the Ministry of Health has de- cided that every case throughout the country is to be the subject' of J cal officer of health. -- |the | Sexy | Not one of them is a silly play, RESEARCH WORK IN CANADA PLANNED Valuable Results Believed to Merit an Increased Appropriation Ottawa, July 9.--Canada will march forward with the foremost industrial nations of the world it the plans of Hon. James Malcolnr and the National Research Counu- cil, of whieh Dr. H. M. Tory is the President, are realized. Canadian research workers already have done notable work, but Carfdada's per capita expenditure on reseach is not one-twentieth that of the United States, and increasing appropria- tions must be made by Parliament if (Canada's natural resources are to be developed to the fullest pos- sible extent. ; That the money can be well spent is indicated by the fact that one investigation alone by the Na- tional Research Council, has maae it possible for the lobster packing industry to savé more money an- nually than the Council has expend- ed in the ten years of its existence in all the researches it has been identified with, The notion that research is only helpful to the manufacturers seems to he quite prevalent, but this 14 not the case. The main object of Dominion Government's pro- gram is the development and utili- zation of the natural resources of Canada. Agriculture, forestry, mining and fisheries have all re- ceived untold henefits from re- search, and all sections of the com- munity have shared in the results. Substantial progress 'has heen made in the control of wheat rust in Western Canada, while a satis- factory solution of the problem of drying damp and tough wheat has practically been reached. Imports ant research has been carried on in New Brunswick on the comparative method of seeding and planting burnt-over forest areas and it is expected that within a few months some final conclusion will he reach- ed in the direction of wiser and saner methods for reforestation of the country. SUMMER FINDS 32 PLAYS IN NEW YORK New York, July 9.--Six of the 10 plays that Burns Mantle, the critic, says he should select as the best of the season's successes in New York are still playing. That is one of the tests of their worthi- ness. At least it is a test of their right. to stand as the most repre- sentative of the playgoers' taste in plays And one of matter, play not one of these six, nor the other four, for that is a salacious play or a in the rougher sense, ora purposeleses play. Which should serve to' encourage the theatre op» tfimists as surely as it will dis- courage those who have been =o patiently "waiting for the theatre to lead the way to hell. These 10 plays Mr. Mantle chose as heing most worthily represen- tative of the season are: Eugene O'Neill's "Strange In- terlud.."" George Kaufman and Edna YerD- ers "The Royal Family." Philip Barry's "Paris Dubose and Dorothy "Porgy." George Abbott and Ann Bridgers' "Coquette." George Manker Walters and Ar- thur Hopkins 'Burlesque. George Kelly's 'Behold Bridegroom." John Galsworthy's Bartlett Cormack's et." Stan 0'Casey's "The Plough and the Stars.' The. first six of- these in the or- der named are still playing and seem likely so long as the weather remains cool, to continue on well into the summer. Some will hold over into the first weeks. of the new season. Others of the season's successes are still with us. plays .entering July. from those mentioned, mostly musical. Mr. Zeigfeld's prosperous "Show Boat." "The Three Musketeers," and *Rosa- lie," the all season pacemakers, "Good News" and "A Connecticut Yankee" Lew Fields' new *Pre- [sent Arms," and Joe Cook's riot- ing' "Rain. or Shine" are among them. Mr. Belasco's '"'Bachelor Father." is still going strong, and Mae West's "Diamon Lil," * Ex- cess Baggage," and "The Silent House" are weathering the season nicely. INFANTILE PARALYSIS TREATED WITH SERUM Hamilton, July 9.--Serum taken from the blood of a former infan- tile paralysis patient, now fully sre- covered. has been used in the ireat- ment of a three-year-old girl just admitted into the General Hospital suffering 'from the dread disease. There are 32° WORLD ADVERTISERS GATHER AT DETROIT Detroit, July 9.--The World Ad« vertisers Congress, which convened here today, considered, in more than a score of professional group meetings, the problem of greater efs ficiency in advertising. The "tremendous force" adver. tising has become in the economic and social structures of all nations was emphasized in his keynote ade dress to the International Advertise ing Association session by . Presis dent C. King Woodbridge, who de- clared that advertising has the "widest of all world markets." Thorough and practical courses in advertising in universities .and colleges the world over were urged by W. F. G. Thacher, head of the Advertising Department of the Unis versity of Oregon, addressing the Educational Department of the As« sociated Advertising Clubs of the World. Such courses, he sald, would be of great value to young men and women who plan to enter the advertising field.
