First A Sailor But a starting point was found. It follows from a memorandum written by a genial and honored gentleman, since passed on to the Elysian Fields, the late Andrew Forgan. Mr, Forgan was a notable the thought Wil Obici: 2,0 GINGER ALE figure on various courses in the vicinity of Montreal, and every toufnament found him in the gar lery. On one such occasion, meet. ing the writer, Mr. Forgan passed over a slip of paper saying: "I think that's about right." It se happened that there was no further meeting during the lifetime of Mr. Forgan; but the slip remained wity the considered trifles which so many men store away as their rel- ies and treasures, apd it came to light when the search for eariy golf records commenced. There is the query: "Who first played golf in Canada?" and the answer followed. Mr, Forgan credited the first performance of this character to one William» Dib. man, born in Glasgow in 1839, a sailor, who in 1854, finding himself in port at Quebec, carried his clubs to 'the Heights of Abraham and there entertained himself in spil- tary. contentment. What constituted Mr, Forgan's authority, I canont tell, mot havi had an opportunity to question that gentleman, and the contents of the memorandum are passed on for what they are worth, (olf was old before that intrepid explorer, Jacques Cartier, landed on the shores of Gaspe in 1534, Strutt, previously referred to, notes that over one hundred years prior to that date, the lords and barons, spiritual and temporal, had decreed _-- LOW PRICES "" Where Quality Counts" BUT As Well Cocoanut inest Shredded 17°... First Club Here There is a wide gap of centuries between that period and the date of the establishment of golf on a permanent basis in the Dominton. It is in 1873 that the seeker will first find definite and accurate records, it being in that year a group of gentlemen met in the of- fice of Sidey Brothers, Common street, Montreal, and "resolved that those present at the meeting showa form themselves into a golf elub to be called the Montreal Golf Club." The meeting was held on November 4, and was the first er- fort to place golf on an organized basis not only in .Canada, but, in- deed, in North America. Since that date' the club has maintained a continuous and uninterrupted ex- istence, The records of the club, care- fully preserved, show that in 1884 the Earl of Derby conveyed by let ter to the Marquis of Lansdowne, then Governor-General of Canuna, the intimation that Her Most Grac- fous Majesty, Queen Victoria had been pleased to grant tha applica- tion of the Montreal Golf Club to assume the prefix "Royal," and, ac- cordingly, the title was changed to one in use since, "The Royal Mont. real Golf Club." The orggnization of the Montreal Golf Club in 1873 was followed two years later, in 1875, by the forma- tion in Quebec of the Quehee Golf Club, which has also maintained continuous existence, and vow ranks as the second oldest organiz- ation of its kind in North America. Naturally, the business rivalry of these two cities soon spread to golf with the result that, following an invitation, a team from the An- cient Capital repaired to Montreal in May, 1876, and played the rnrst of a series of inter-city matches, the continuity of which has re- mained unbroken, save during the war years, after which they were resumed. It is worthy of note that these early matches were conducted with punctilious regard for the dignity of the pastime, It was the custom for the two captains to drive the first ball, each for his own side, The captains were usually attired in flannels and red coats, with caps of the "forevand aft" type. IL was imperative that each captain should wear white gloves while perform- ing the initial drive; after that the gloves were removed, not being considered necessary for the re- mainder of play, : It was in the year 1876 that the story of the Toronto Golf Club be- gan, This latter club has also con- tinued without interruption, and, thus, Canada has the distinction of being the home of the three oldest golf clubs on the North American continent, As was the case In Montreal and Quebec, the first Toronto golfers kad no club house and the histor- jan of the organization recounts: "Members frequently took pienic baskets with them, and had their Junch under the trees," What hap- py simplicity. The history of the Toronto Golf Club contains one chapter of more than passing interest. In the spring of 1895 three members, having been summoned to appear beivie the magistrate at Little York, were convicted on a charge of playing golf on Sunday, contrary to the provisions of the Lord's Day Act. They appealed against the convies tion; and in the autumn assizes of the county court, His Honor Judge McDougall found a verdict in their favor on the ground that "golf is not a game of hall similar in any sense to the games enumerated in, or intended to he prohibited by, the statute, and aiso that it is nor a noisy game." This judgment has never since that time been success- fully challenged. Travellers who are acquainted with the cities of Montreal, Que- bec, and Toronto know to what ex- tent golf has prospered in each of these communities, and particu- larly in the larger cities, each with its score of organizations providing accommodation for large member- ships, From the modest beginning at Montreal, interest in the game spread as the country grew until today it is possible to find good courses in every part of the Do- minion. There are courses at suns mer resorts, and, in some instances, large corporations have found it wise to provide proper playing space for their staffs. It was, in- deed, a modest beginning, but the foundation laid was a very sound one, as today there are approxi- mately 600 clubs established in the Dominion, and there are indications that the number will be added to, particularly in view of the fact that municipalities are beginning to rea- lize that a good golf club is a valu- able factor in tii citizen- (C0 0000000000@ PE in the noon hour en route for of shipment, Bonarlaw. Another mile having been traversed, the other bull started to act strangely and caused one of the three young men driving the herd to take to a tree for temporary safety. Becoming pacified at length, the bull continued the journey without giv- ing any further trouble. When ¥or- sythe, the main street, was reached, animal No, 3 was with difficulty re- strained from entering F. N. Mar- ett and Company's store, The real thrills, however, were in store. Hav- ing reached the southern end of the street, three of the four animals de- cided to lie down. The fourth, a roan steer, was net so disposed. Espy- ing a lady resident near the wood- pile in her yard, he charged in that direction, the lady reaching the back door safely with but few seconds to spare. Wheeling round, the steer made up the street with glaring eyes, Meeting the curtainless tour- ing car in which were two of the trio of drivers, the creature charged' the radiator first, and not being sat- is fled with this, charged into the side of the car, both occupants being. chased out. Their safety was only assurde when one stunned the ani- mal with a large stone. Recovering, the steer wandered into the front yard of another residence, By this time both sidewalks were lined by a crowd of bystanders, who at safe distances, waited with curi. osity to see how the animal would be corralled, Two gentlemen then had an exciting time with it, one climbing a maple tree with surpris- ing agility and the other playing squirrel with it. The steer was ulti. mately captured, but after being loaded on the trick, died, One of the resting animals, a 3- year-old heifer, now decided to take its turn in providing the sensational.
