Powers and Stome, Inc, New York and Chicago, i -------- TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1928 ALICE STREET EXTENSION For months now the Board of Works has been struggling with the admittedly knotty problem of extending Alice Street from Rit- son Road for about half a block to connect up with the new part of the street which has been provided for in-plans of new develop- ment around Oshawa Boulevard and east thereof, At various times the Board of Works has made what are erroneously termed "pro. gress" reports. As a matter of fact no ac- tual progress has been reported, The Chair man has made some attempts, it is true, but appears to have been most successful in lo- cating difficulties and discovering objections, Like the ten spies who reported on the land of Canaan he seems to have been adept at seeing giants in the path of the proposed ex tension, Unless the Board of Works does not care about its reputation it should not in its own interest any longer proclaim its inability to deal with a matter that it is generally ad- mitted cannot be shelved permanently, Nothing can be gained by further delay. The cost is not likely to be lessened, The difficulties are not likely to decrease in num- ber. Why should not the Board of Works take this matter up seriously and try to find a reasonable solution? If the Board cannot do so, then let them refer it back to the City Council together with such information as they have secured and let the Council try to work out a solution'through some other channel, EXTEND OLIVE AVENUE While on the subject of street extensions we desire to give our hearty endorsement to the proposal to extend Olive Avenue to Sim- coe Street, ! Oshawa owes much to its hardy pioneers, but those pioneers were lamentably short- sighted in respect to what is called in this modern age 'city planning." There are too many blind streets and far too many that just fall short by a block or two of connecting with an important thor- ' oughfare, Olive Avenue is a notable exam- ple. : Now for a few thousand dollars a perman- ent benefit can be secured by putting this street through to Simcoe Street and a con- necting. link established between Simcoe Styeet and Ritson Road, - y 'The proposed extension would serve all the south-east section of the city. Let us take advantage of the present opportunity to correct this error on the part of a former generation of Oshawa citizens, A SUMMER COGITATION In the course of a day's leisure hours an- ordinarily active mind runs into many av- enues of reflection, For what is apparently no reason whatever we find ourselves sudden- ly wondering about things which before that moment we had always taken for grant. ed, On the instant the common place may become the fantastic, and the obvious may become mystifying, ; But when someone asks, "Why aren't bar- ber shop ceilings put to proper use? he raises a question that is not merely whim- sical, It is a practical question; as tangible as the plaster and stucco of which the ceil- ing is made, It is as wide and impending as the combined area of the ceilings of all the barber shops in the world, . Why should this space be left blank and unused? Think of the number of eyes that gaze daily on barber shop ceilings? In practically all cases the owners of these eyes are in a receptive mood, Lying flat on their back they could give their minds over to oh- servation and reflection such as could be stimulated in no other way, One wearies s0 quickly of even the most intricate pattern or design worked in the plaster of the ceil- ing; and it is seldom that such contempla. *tion is useful, But a barber shop ceiling inscribed with suitable suggestions, with hints and com- ment of all kinds could be made the source of much profit, Infinite is the number of suggestions which spring to that mind as suitable for this purposé, By a happy com- bination of materidl placed on the ceiling in the direct line of vision of the victim in the barber chair we could suggest thoughts on the higher life, on morality, on politics, and on social and individual problems of all kinds, By an ingenious device of slides we might even give the customer a choice of topics to be displayed, As 4 final inducement to promote this use of barbbr shop ceilings it is suggested that it would relieve the barber of the necessity of entertaining his reclining and helpless guest, That alone would make it worth while, EDITORIAL NOTES A good place for a Balkan prince seeking, a restful month or two this summer might be on the sides of Etna, Airplane engines can now be equipped with silencers, Can this idea spread to motorcycles? The one-horse shay came to an end all at once, Many modern vehicles achieve the same spectatular finale, Essential equipment for hiking across country includes a pleasant manner of ask- ing for a ride, ! a ---- Do You Own CARTER'S Real Estate 5 King St E. or phone 1380 31 King St. E. St. Thomas, May 21.--Residents in the west end of the eity have deriving much interest and amusement since last Saturday from watching a husky woman boss a gang of men engaged in dismanti. ing two old store buildings. She sta- tioned herself on a pile of bricks, and within half an hour had put new life into the men engaged in tearing down the old brickwork. In fact it is claimed that the men have done more work in one day since the lady took charge of op- erations than they were formerly doing in two days. The work is « |being rushed for the erection of a large service station.
