_TO HONOR MEMORY OF QUEEN VICTORIA | i | ! he Oshmuva Baily Timex lhe Oshawa Dail VOL. 2--NO. 120 OSHAWA, ONTARIO, TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1928 - . . VICTORI DAY MAY 24th Thursday, 1 we pack our baskets and go on a picnic. Our neighbors, forsooth, are taking two days' holidays and are seeing Niagara Falls. Some of the rest of the street are just spending the holiday quietly, off on a fishing trip or with a tryout at the golf grounds. And, all over Canada, in every hamlet, village and town, from Columbus to Taronto, the same thing will (eke place--if it doesn't rain! Becausewyou see, Queen ic- toria was born on that day, and yt Bsa, in this day and generation is, that we have a holiday. You know the old rhyme: "The 24th of May is the Queen's Birthday; If we don't get a holiday, we'll all run away." So the Board of Education is givif® the boys and girls not one day's holiday, but two, just for good measure, And all the boys and girls from 7 to 70 will' make merry, and shoot firecrackers and have a general good time, And, of course, someone eternally asks, "Why the celebra- tion?" Well, as the Encyclopedia Brittanica very nicely says, Queen Victoria 'captivated the affections of the multitude and the respect of thoughtful men. She set the example of motherly sympathy and queenly dignity." Since her accession to the throne, May 24, the anniversary of her birth, has been observed throughout the Empire, and upon his coronation King George V expressed the wish that his grandmother's birthday should be more widely ob- served than even his. During her reign, the good queen Victoria consolidat- ed her throne, which had been slipping just the least bit, in the estimation of Europe and of her own people. The confidence inspired by her personality made her a link be- tween all parts of the empire, and her opinion carried much weight with Disraeli and other eminent statesmen of the day. In fact, it is said of Disraeli that he would never press a policy of his party that was distastetful to the queen, although she never refused to sanction the express: ed will of the electorate, Her force of character and honesty of heart were a radical change from the monarchs that preceded her, and she had not been long on the throne beforg love of their queen was deeply imbedded in the minds of her people. And, to this day, the name of "Good Queen Victoria" is held in high esteem, for nothing has been found to taint it. And so, we observe each year the anniversary of her birth, although perhaps, in the jollity of the day, we for- get the sterling virtues of England's best-loved ruler, who was ever an example to her people.
