There have been times, however, when the inventor gained nothing from his genius and the real owner of the mineral deposits was robbed even of his lands. In the California gold rush of 1849 many fortunes were made by the diggers for the yellow dirt but the man who owned the land upon which the gold was discovered was re- duced to dependence upon the state of Cali- fornia by the frantic rush for the precious metal. : This man was Capt. John Augustus Sut. "ter, a Swiss, who came to America in 1834 with a number of Swiss friends with the idea of establishing an ggricultural colony in Missouri. He put practically everything he had into supplies for the colony and was na : THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 17, left penniless when the Mississippi steam- boat on which he shipped these goods struck a snag and sank, Abandoning the colony idea, he joined a party of trappers and went to Fort .Van- - couver. Eventually he reached San Fran- cisco and set up as a trader near the present city of Sacramento. " His stockade, later famous as Sutter's Fort, was the centre of a colopy of six white men and a few friendly Indians. He obtained a grant of land from the Mexican government and named his set- tlement New Helvetia. In 1848 he owned a flour mill, saw mill, thousands of head of 'live stock and a large grain acreage. January 24, 1848, one of Sutter's men, James W. Marshall, discovered gold. In vain Sutter tried to hush the news, but the story got out and hordes of gold-seekers swarmed into his fields, squatted on his lands and dug them over and drove off his cattle. Sutter's losses grew so large he had to mort- gage such property as had not been appro- priated to raise funds to fight the squatters in court. At last, deprived of almost all his lands, Sutter obtained a pension of $250 from the California legislature and moved to Pennsylvania. Hoag, a native of Ireland, and now about 70 years of age, claims that he has known Sidney Smith, creator of "Andy Gump," since Smith was a boy in Canandaigua. : Some years ago an operation for a facial growth left Hoag wifh an ab- breviated and distorted chin, Hoag alleges that Smith took his facial lines as a model for his character, and that the publication of the com- ic strip has been to his own shame and mental torture, as he realizes his own face is being caricatured, SATURDAY AFTERNOON SESSION FOR HOUSE : OF COMMONS Ottawa, May 16~The House of Commons will meet at two o'clock on Saturday next and the sitting will terminate at six o'clock. "Was Paul Revere married?" Willie: "Naw! How could he get away at midnight if hs was married?" : THE RETORT COURTEOUS (London C%zerver) Lord Rosslyn--'James Erskine" of past stage days--has this Mar- got Asquith story in his racy me- morfes, "My Gamble With Life": "One day mp father was wearing a flashy tie, and walking down Bond street (London's fashionable shopping street) he met 'Margot', who stopped him, and during their conversation said: "'What a vulgar tie you are wearing, Lord Rosslyn.' , ""Yet," said jay father, 'you're right! I remember when putting it on this morning thinking the .|same thing myself, but comforted myself with the thought that I should never meet anyone unkind enough to say so." THE DIFFERENCE (Baltimore Sun) Two waiters are walking from Berlin te Geneva, 900 miles, in talled coats, boiled shirts and winged collars to prove that theirs is a red-blonded occupation. But their trip shows more than that. They are to progress from restaur- ant to restaurant through Germany and Switzerland and they will re- ceive food, beds and clean raiment as needed from comrades of their 928 own pro-:ssion. They thus "1s trate to uncrowded America the compactnass of Wes'.rn Europe. Where is the 500-mile strei:h in the United Statcs along which f mal restaurants le at intervals no greater than can be walked In one day? T -- WORSE THAN WAR (From the Border Cities Star) It is literally impossible to paint too black a picture of the ravages of the narcotic evil; but it is a well-substantiated fact that it is a far more potent terror than is war. Its economic t811 of both human lives and cash dollars is vaster, year in and year out, and the end is far from being in sight. And all these things are so mainly because the people at large in the nations most seriously d4f- fected--and thelr number in legion --are quite passive in their stand upon the narcotic evil, Persons who will talk by the hour against war and against loquor seem to give the mater of illicit drug trafficking, and its accompanying woes, but little, if any, attention. And yet its grip upcn society is far more deadly than the other two gvils combined, if we are to rely upon the convictions expressed by several of the informed delegates from various countries to the League of Nations Opium Commis- sion, PAINFUL MEMORIES (London Sunday Pictorial) A man recently complained in court that he had to cook all the meals after he and his wife re- PARTNER IN Partners: A.
