Bennett, leader, and practically all Opposition members in attend- ance. Discussion was very general in its character, and no announce- ment was forthcoming at the con- clusion of the meeting. It 18 under- stood, however, that criticism will be voiced from the Opposition benches in respect to the appoint- ment of a minister to Toklo, when the estimate is under consideration. No definite decision to move an amendment, though, was reached at today's caucus. maaan ma---------- -- EE Headaches Don't "give in" to a headache as something that must be endured, Nor suffer the pains too many women accept as their "natural lot." APRIL 14, 1928 Many years ago Edward Brauns- combe, at that time one of the lead- ing temor soloists of Westminster Abbeyy choir, conceived the idea bi taking out to the various para of the Empire a combination of Cathedral boys and men, for the purpose of exemplifying the great cultural value of unaccompanied part-singing. It was the idea of a man who loved the old music of his country and wanted to carry its in- ration and beauty to the far places of the Empire. The first tour was in Canada-- twenty years ago--and so great was the success of the venture that in after years every part of the English-speaking world was visited, and tours of Java, Manila, Portugese East Africa, German West Africa, China, and Japan were undertaken. They were all successful. Now Mr. Branscombe comes back again to Canada, and presents his Westminster Glee Singers here at St. Andrew's Church on April 28th, afternoon and evening performance, The present combination consists of six of England's most famous soprano boy soloists, and of adults two male altos, three tenors and two basses, all vocalists of standing and preminently experienced in the difficult art of part-singing. Whilst anthems and carols are a part of their extensive repertoire, they rely mainly on the attraction of secular part-musie, consisting of many of the choral gems which have been provided in such plenitude by the leading British composers. Their programs will be found to contain a great diversity of styles, embrac- ing a considerable amount of light numbers, solos with vocal accom- paniment, sailors' chanteys, num- erous quartets, and many novelties of all descriptions, The unique nature of their en- tertainment is further heightened by ifs delightful method of pres- entation. The stiff formality of the ordinary concert platform has heen discarded, and many of the items are sung in a beantiful stage set- tig, and much effective and novel grouping of the singers. TRIM ANKLES NEED HOSE IN DAINTY COLOR AND CUT That bewitching feminine ankle that has intrigued poets into cen: turies of raving has grown capri- cious again! Spring is here with. its fashion changes--and smart ankles respond to the shifting mode. A new note in heel decoration 'is the reinforcement that extends as a decorative panel up the entire length of the back of the seam; and, '| in contrast, the very low, square heel shadow, Clocks are noted as important in chiffon and mesh hose. Lisle hose are still the thing for sport occasions, and often they take distinctive patternings, Spring colors are similar to win- ter shades, but lighter in tone. The beiges are important; yellow beige to accompany the smart yellow- beige costume; mauve beige adapt- ed to the bright navy or black costume; gray>beige, to be with gray or beige, or with printed costume, Nude is popular for evening, as it harmonizes with almost any cos- tume, Flesh, worn in the evening with white or flesh colors, harmonizes with bright colored slippers and white gown, - White jade--a resort smart because it harmonizes light and off-white costumes the smart natural colored shoes. U,P.R, UNDER WATER NEAR CARIBOU, ME. Ice Jam in Aroostook River Threatens Heavy Dam- age to Railways the color--is with and Caribou, Me., April 14.--An {ce jam three miles long and still growing despite the efforts of men and dynamite, filled the Aroos- took River above the Caribou dam threatening heavy damage to two railroads as well as the light and water supply of this town. Half a mile of the Canadian Pa- cific Railway tracks lay submerg- ed under water backed up by the jar. 'The rails of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad were free of water, but fear was expressed that they would be buried under tons of ice when the jam lets go. A Canadian Pacific dynamite crew of 12 men had used two tons of explosive up to Wednesday even- ing in unsuccessful attempts to start the ice down river, while 8 men were patrolling the B. & A. right-of-way. The work of the dynamiters, 800 feet upstream, has caused trouble in the power house of the Caribou Water, Light and Power Company, where refuse loosened by the explosions has seeped into racks and pumps. Power company officials said that unless the trou- ble abates they would order the dynamiting halted through fear that the power house would be put out of commission. A mile outside the North Bergen tunnel a passenger traln, bound westward, grazed the loosened tank and knocked it still further to the side. The engine of the freight nosed into the tunnel and at the same moment the big tank crashed against the fan house, where a dy- namo supplies power to blow the tunnel clear of smoke. In the fan house was the motor attend- ant, George W. Mitsch, 65 years old. The fan house crumpled and Mitsch was buried under the de- bris of steel girders, machinery and cement, Three men who live in a hoase close to the tracks, saw the accl- dent. They ran to the tunnel mouth and started to extricate Mitsch. First they cleared an air passage for him and listened for the shout that would tell them he was still alive. They heard' it, and desper- ately worked to free the man. Charles Lyons, the conductor of the freight, which had stopped; the engineer, Fred Chichester, and the train crew joined them and gent word for help. Lieutenant Quilter of the North Bergen police dispatched reserves to the scepe. In half ap hour they had Mitsch out. An ambulance carried him to the North Hudson Hospital, where it was found that his left leg was broken, his body badly bruised and that his skul! might be fractured. Mitsch asked attendants not to notify his wife, Estelle, of the accident until morn- ing. She learned about it as she was starting for church. Both east and west bound tracks of the West Shore were blocked for some time while crews got the big boiler back on the flat car. Oswald Ernest Heyden, rector of Avening, before a bishop's commission at the Shire Hall, Gloucester, on charges of conduct unbecoming to the cloth, brought by Lady Eleanor Byng, (not the wife of Lord Byng, form- er Governor-General of Canada) to the stand. The hearing was ordered by Rt. Rev. A. C. Hedlam, Bishop of Glou- cester, after he had heard com- plaints that the rector paid court to two of his parishioners, had kissed one, "notwithstanding the fact that she repelled his atten- tions," had told 'naughty' stories, used profane language and patron- ized ale houses, Lady Byng, in her evidence, said her daughter, who used to play tennis at the rectory, made a statement to her, in consegeunce of which she told her not to play tennis at the rectory again. The rector's wife gave evidence. She said she had been married to Mr. Heyden for 28 years. All her married life had been exceptionally happy. She knew of her husband's friendship with Miss Chipp but she never had a moment's anxiety about him either with Miss Chipp or anybody. She remembered Miss Sharpe's letter. Miss Sharpe fol- lowed the rector about and seem- ed to want him to pay her atten- tions, witness said. Miss Nina Chipp was the next witness. She denied any improp- riety between herself and the rec- tor. He was just a friend. Cross- examined by Mr. Clements, witness sald the rector lent her novels by "| Thomas Hardy. Counsel: "Did he lend you 'Jude, the obscure? '" "No." "Did he lend you any hooks hy a person named Marie Stopes?' "No." "You swear that?" I do."
