Trussed in a sack, the body of the wealthy widow was found De- cember 26 near San Ferpando, 20 miles north west of here. Death had resulted from congestion of the lungs due to exposure, said the verdict of the coroner's jury. Dr. Charles M. McMillan, 57 held as the woman's suspected slayer, refused to testify, on advice of counsel. Authorities are investigating his activities in managing Mrs. Ap- pleby's business affairs. ' Will. G. Noble, an undertaker, testified that Mrs. Ab pyp yah testified that Mrs. Appleby had suffered a broken nose and severe bruises about the chest and body. The autopsy report of Dr. Frank Webb, which was read at the inquest, together with Noble's statement, established the fact, according to district attorney's officers, that Mrs. Appleby was #ot dead when her canvas encased body was tossed from an automo- bile.
