WOM!N BLUEBEAR) CHARGED IN ATHENS Mystery of Stove and Her Two Lost Hus- bands mt Vienna, Dec. 24.--Athens is much alarmed by the revelation of the exploits of a Russian woman named Mme. Tamara, but chris ened by the newspapers "Mm Bluebeard." The woman first appeared in Athens four years aga, announc- ing that she was a widow, She was devoutly religious, belonging to a peculiar Russian sect, and turned one of the rooms of her beautiful flat into a private chapel She also installed a furnace for central heating, of greater size than seemed called for by the cli- mate and the size of her flat. After & year she married aszalr --a prominent Chinese merchant, whom she converted to her faith. He was suddenly recalled tec China--so Mme, Tamara declared --and in a subsequent letter, an- nounced that he would not return. She then obtained a divorce under the easy system obtaining in Greece, and shortly after married another Chinaman, after similarly converting him to her own faith. Chinaman Number Two disappear- ed as quickly as his predecessor, and his wife could obtain no news of him whatever, Again she won the heart of a Celestial, but this third man was already engaged to a woman of kis race, who became so incensed at the breach that she employed de tectives to trace Chinamen Num ber Two, so that the Russian wo- man might not be left free to marry again. Investigations, it is alleged, led to the discovery that the bodies of the Chinamen had been commit- ted to the flames of the large cen- tral heating installation, after their throats had been cut while they slept. Mme. Tamara was arrested, and the police investigation have re- vealed, it is stated, that the two murdered husbands whose fate has been traced were only the last of a series. The police are convinced the woman was influenced by an- normal religious mania, as, aec- cording to the tenets of her sect, she had converted lost souls by offering themr up as sacrifices. PRINTING CO LIMITED that CHRISTMAS 3 MESSAGES (Continued fron from page § sporting, and feasting, Is ) lat mas following in the same direc tion? In many cases it has rum on ahead. Many places of business are crowded to the limit, and body and mind are soon too worn to rejoice in the Christ-child. But the de mands of the period and the com- petition of trade and ehe profit reaped from the customs of the pe riod drive them om. Public ser- vants in post and express offices are driven almost to despair. Moth- ers are worked almost to the break- ing point, and Eirls, busy all aay in office and store, work far into the night "making things for Christmas". All this seems very lovely, if it is not done at too great a price, And then there is the almost commercial spirit of giving, No longer are we content with a thoughtful remembrance for the loved ones of our own home, and those who need just the offering that we can give, but a #i* must he sent to this one and that, because, or for fear, a gift will come to ur from them. And very few have the courage, in attempting to stem the excess, to "feel mean", Even the Christmas card originally so simple has become an orgy of ex- penditure. REV, DR, H. 8. DOVGALL, Pastor Simcoe St. United Church, What is the secret of peace? Strangely enough it is no secret at all! We see it everywhere. Ask the smiling crowds jostling each others to good naturedly with their packages, They know. Ask that father that I saw going home with a little red handsleigh under his arm, He knows. Ask the family groups around the Christmas trees. They know. As the Spirit of Christmas as it speeds its flight around the world leaving behind smiles and happiness, It knows, What is the secret of peace? It is justice linked up with love. It is the spirit of intelligence linked up with a kind heart, Not a sword but a soul can brig and maintain the peace of the world. That is why Jesus is the Prince of Peace, The love of self is the hottom cause of all unhappiness in the in- dividual, the family. the neirh"or hood, the nation. When a man fis all the while worrying about his own business, own gains, own plea- sures, own rights, peace will be as far from him as truth from falsity, He is utterly wrong in his method. Anthony Trollope, when in Ameri- ca, wrote a book entitled, 'He thought He Was Right". It por- trayed a husband struggling for his own rights, his own privileges, He died a defeated man in a lunati- asylum, Christine Rosetta sings this song of self as the chief disturber o our peace:-- "All others ere outside myself, I lock the door and bar them out,-- The turmoil, tedium, gadahout, I lock the door upon myself and bar them out. But who shall wall zelf from myself, Most loathed of all? God harden me against myself, This coward with pathet"e voice, Who craves for ezse and rest and love. Tveelf, areh traitor to myself, My bollowest friend, my deadlies' foe, Ty cloz, whatever road I go." This Is where Jesus shows Him 'f the Prince of Peace. Jesue he'ps to win victory over self Jesus teaches a man to think of thers. Jesus sets him to bring joy and peace and rest into the ives of others, and lo! all the while, without expecting it at all his own heart Fe nes the » 2 [ the Christmas babe. Not by way of himself : all, but by way of others he ha: scovered the secret of peace, Belief in the Christmas song fs ssurance that in and over our own sorld peace and goodwill shall yet prevail. Jesus is not a defeated tongue Which the glad angels of the Advent sung, Their cradle anthem Saviour's birth, Glory to God, and peace unte he earth! Through the mad discord send that calming word, Which wind and wave on wild, Genesseret heard. Lift in Christ's name His Cross against the Sword! Still lives for Earth, which fiend so long have trod, The great hope, resting on the truth of God, Evil will cease, and violence pas: away, And the tired world breathe fre: through a long Sabbath day. HUGH 8. DOUGALL, MOSLEM QUEEN APPEARS UNVEILED Male Members of Royal Suite are As tounded London, Dec. 24.--The Daily Mail's correspondent ahoard the steamship Rajputana, which is carrying Amir Amanullah, of Afghanistan, and his family to Europe, regords what is probably the first instance ofia Mos lem queen and Moslem princess ap- pearing unveiled in public, In defiance of Moslem ' tradition and against the opposition of nis mullahs (priests) King Amanullah al for the to unveil, their fellow passengers and share in the deck sports. As soon as the party re-enters Moslem territory they must reveil, but just now they are enjoying | their new freedom with unembarrass ed childlike delight. Ministers, generals and other male members of the royal suite, however, are astounded, feeling it is almost a sacrilege to look upon the faces of royal ladies, Sir Francis' Humpareys, British minister of Afga who is aboard is hardly less astenished, since during five years' residence in Afgh he has mever seen or adventurer,--certain teachers to the contrary. If you but stop to think of it, every struggle is an effort to rise,--to come up, not to gd' down.
