The river rose from 4 to 5 feet, submerging Conner's Island, a few hundred feet off shore about 2 miles above the falls. o The west end of Cayuga Island, in the La Salle section, was under a half foot of water early to-day. Many homes are located there. Water ris- ing in the cellars put out fires in furn- aces and residents were compelled to move out. Some of the homes are equipped with syphons in the cellars to pupmp water out. The flood had gained such proportions that the syphons were useless, Ly large oak tree was blown down by the wind on the lower end of the island, causing considerable damage to the house occupied by Newton Wise. No one was injured, The cen- tral and end end of the island are higher than the west end and no trouble was experienced there. In the downtown section of the city only little damage was reported from the storm. An electric hight pole in Buffalo avenue at Sixth street was blown down and limbs were blown from trees in some sections, but no serious damage rezalted. Niagara Dist-ict Hit. St. Catharines, Ont.,.Dec. 8.--The southern portion or mountain section of the Niagara district was badly hit by the storm last night and this morn- ing. At Port Colborne, a strong wind from the lake blew water into the harbor, putting piers two feet under water. An accompanying heavy rain last night also helped to fill the cellars and cover factory floors with water. The lower floors of the Maple Leaf Flour Mill and the Government ele- vator are submerged. Men on their way to work found themselves stranded in a shack half way out on the pler where they were still marooned this morning. Boats in the harbor are holding their positions with difficulty. , One coal freighter, the Valleycamp, broke loose from her moorings at the east pigr and was blown across the harbor to the Canada Steamship dock. The tug Manley helped get the vessel clear, Twenty tons of coal were washed from the coal dock. All construction work on the ship canal has been suspended, Crystal Beach Park is said to be completely under water. Local line street cars at Welland are completely tied up Ly a blizzard. Two Canada Steamship boats left Port Colborne at noon Jonterdar for the head of the lakes--the Saskatoon and Selkirk. While the Selkirk is be- lieved to be oyt of the storm area some apprehension is felt fur the Sas- katoon. Toronto. -- South-central Ontario to-day was shivering in anticipation of a new cold wave. The gale struck this region in the night, steadying to forty-mile per hour westerly wind to- day. The mercury eased to 22 de- grees above zero this morning, with the weatherman forecasting colder temperatures and snow, No shipping was proceeding on the lower lakes to-day, so far as could be learned here. Signs were blown down and win- dows smashed in various sections of the city by force of the wind. Storm wrought havoc among Great Lakes shipping boats in the congest- ed Detroit River channel, and seri- ously affected the ferry service to Windsor. = Tug boat's crew of five was safely landed by fireboat rescuers after it had been lashed about help- lessly and driven upstream in face of the gale. Three occupants of the rescue boat narrowly escaped drown- Stocks | STOBIE, FORLONG & Bonds Private Wire System 11 King Street East, Oshawa -- Above C.P.R. Office Phones 143 and 144 S. F.
